    9.5 grs Red Dot?

I am away from all my manuals and wondering in my mind if 9.5 grs of Red Dot is excessive for a 30-30 with a 150gr cast boolit? My gut tells me it's ok but my mind is next to the gun when fired An internet search did not help.
    Thanks

The only Manual I have on hand(next to my recliner) is the LYMAN 49th. No listing for RED DOT, no listing for 150gr Cast.

Thank you sir. I 've already loaded 30 rounds (oops) but they'e not way overboard so I 'll try them in my Mauser 93 first to see what's what. I owe you one.

Of course I'll cross check my manuals when I return home.

If you have something else to shoot them in, you might want to use it. The Mauser 93 is a weaker action than the later models.

anything that works for 170 should be safe for 150

Thanks, Grmps. I looked at all those but did not find a reference to 9.5grs of Red Dot in the 30-30. Perhaps I overlooked it.

According to Lyman, I'm 1/2 grain over max for the 151 gr bullet. I fired one from my Marlin last night; primer is slightly flat but case head expansion is nil. I'm going to shoot them but next batch will be a grain lighter on the powder.

They shoot ok. This is 40 yards and as I'm getting it dialed in this happened. Crapnoodle.

It's a good load in my 8mm. These are at 40 yards. I pulled a shot with the 44-40 but shot a 4" group on steel at 100 yards so I'm happy with both!

FWIW - - - Quickload says that's on the hairier side of maximum. IMHO Red Dot is great for reduced velocity loads - pressure in the vicinity of 12000 psi or so. If all you have is Red Dot, it will work but you can never get the velocity of slower powders without seriously over-pressuring the rifle.

This was a mistake on my part as far as the 30-30 goes and won't be repeated. However I will use 9.5 grains Red Dot in the 8x57 often and you can see why.

The 3 holes, upper left on target, I see oval shaped holes from bullet tipping.

Good eye but I think the cardboard target against the wood pallet is the culprit. Look at the 8mm and 44-40 holes in the later post. I'll try the 30-30 @ 100 yds and see if yaw is occuring. Thanks, SWheeler.

    9.5 good for 30-06
    8.5 for. 308 W
    7.5 for 30-30
    All with 150 gr. cast
    Good subloads works for me.
    All Red Dot.

Any hint of velocity on the 8mm 175 grainer load?

My eddicated guess is around 1500fps or so. I sold my chronograph as I have found I don't care as much about velocity as I did before. If a load reaches my accuracy standard and good terminal effects if a hunting load- I'm happy.

I let my brother shoot it today with these loads and the smart aleck cut a perfect 3 shot cloverleaf at 40 yards (.6")
    Love it!
