18 cav #1 buckshot????? Best for self defense

Anyone make 18 cav #1? I’ll buy 2 of them.

#1 is supposed to be the best for self defense. Any 18 cav out there?

Number 1 buck is the smallest diameter shot that reliably and consistently penetrates more than 12 inches of standard ordnance gelatin when fired at typical shotgun engagement distances. A standard 2 ¾-inch 12 gauge shotshell contains 16 pellets of #1 buck. The total combined cross sectional area of the 16 pellets is 1.13 square inches. Compared to the total combined cross sectional area of the nine pellets in a standard #00 (double-aught) buck shotshell (0.77 square inches), the # 1 buck shotshell has the capacity to produce over 30 percent more potentially effective wound trauma.

In all shotshell loads, number 1 buckshot produces more potentially effective wound trauma than either #00 or #000 buck. In addition, number 1 buck is less likely to over-penetrate and exit an attacker's body.

Lee makes 18 cav molds that are listed here:

MP-Molds can make a wonderful buckshot mold. What's nice is that he can easily machine them using a ball mill. No special cherry involved. I'll put in a request for details.
Not sure how many cavities he can fit on a mold block.

Start a group buy discussion thread or shop around for a Lyman 4 cavity .300 mold.

Please explain. More details please. How do you even know that? .310 is half way between #1 and 0 so seems hard to get ahold of.

Considering that #1's will self stack. Pour a string of 9 of them into a 12 gauge shell and it gives you perfect 3 stacks of 3. So I have a hard time believing that .310 is "better" at stacking. It might be better in other area's.
But that is not the claim you made.

Not that I am trying to do anything nasty in your wheaties.

But I really dislike it when people want to take opinion and state it as fact.

If it is opinion call it opinion and leave it at that. If it is fact you need to quote sources.
And with that parting shot I am done here.

Stacking buckshot in wads should consider diameter. But since I really do not care what size anyone picks, do what you want. Aside from considering diameter, there is also density and terminal performance. I have .300 and .310 molds. Do the critics? I do not consider this to be opinion, but fact. Why so serious?

Last post here, you all do what you will, the 18 cavity mold will have sprues up the wazoo. This is another option that will also produce a superior ball because it, and the Mihec mold use sprue plates. This is a great mold. Mihec mold better, but either way you are a winner.

I would buy one, possibly two. Always room for more buckshot molds.

I have heard back from Miha on this one.

He STRONGLY recommends limiting this one to an 8 cavity mold. He says his machining on n 18 cavity mold would be a nightmare, and that the ease of running (casting in) an 8 cavity mold would far outweigh any expectations for a huge cavity mold. And, from his previous experimentations, the balls in the 8 cavity come out much more round than they ever could in a huge cavity mold configuration.

So, hoping it's agreeable to the OP, and others, I will suggest that you close this initial expression of interest thread, and allow me to open formal discussion for an 8 cavity mold.

I'll point to that new thread here, and will entertain orders quickly.

.310 is also the exact size ball that you use in the .32 caliber muzzleloader. The ball would have a dual purpose.

i cast .310 buckshot using lee 2 cavity mold.i use a sharpshooter mold for #4 buck. the .310 buck stacks perfect 3 to a layer. and pattern great. i load #4 buck for my self-defense rounds. not sure how far they penetrate but 27 pellets would hurt. have about 70 lbs of the .310 now thats a lot of casting time with a 2 cavity.
