Changing Sights on a Star BM Project

Picked up a couple Star BM's cheap and decided to make one a project. I've never done anything like this so it was fun and scary at the same time. I decided to change the front and rear sights to a set of SIG P238's that I picked up on the bay for $11

I used my bench top mill to remove the front sight then after lots of measuring, cut out most of the material for the dovetail. After most of the material was gone I started in with a hand file that I had ground smooth on one side to cut the dovetail. This actually went very smooth and not to much work. I did end up cutting slightly over sized and had to let some locktite setup over night but ill see if it flies out when I shoot it.

The rear required only minor modifications to the slide as the factory dovetail is a lot bigger then the SIG rear sight dovetail. A small amount had to be relieved from the top of the slide and that was it. Then I made a small shim to fill the space to tighten up the dovetail. Lots of hand filing and fitting of a very small shim but it turned out ok I think.

The job is not perfect and I have no idea where it is going to shoot but i can file and fit some more to make it hit where I want.

Good job. I filed my front sight down too much so I filed a valley in it and soldered a piece of brass rod for a bead. It hits poa now.

If the front sight is too loose, you can take a center punch and put some dimples on the bottom of the flat on the slide to form an interference fit. If that doesn't work, you can take a flat punch and give a few light taps on the top of the dovetail slot to give you even more tension... I hope I said that clear enough.
