Hunting Load for '98 Krag

Been getting by with the 311299 for years but even though my Krag runs .308×300 I found as many of you have that it doesn't matter as the throats are oversized. The 314299 sized .312 is "IT". Larry Gibson's tried and true starting point: 28gr 4895 and a tuft of dacron runs 1,800 fps and shoots inside 6" at 200 yards in my rifle. Your results may vary. I will experiment with a bit higher charge to satisfy curiosity but am more than happy as is.

My Krag shoots most 30 caliber boolits quite well, but the 314299 gives the tightest groups. I size mine .311 and load it with13.6 to 14.5 grains of 2400 for light loads and 31 grains of IMR 4064 for heavier loads. I tried the 13.6 grain load without the gas check but the groups opened up quite a bit. I have some surplus 4895 so I may try that 28 grain load.
