For jacketed, I use a Hornady cam lock. For lead, I use an
RCBS but use shell holders instead of the aluminum, junk. I also put a couple of cotton balls inside to protect the bullet. I use one of two items to hit against, the first being a heavy block of wood and strike against the end grain. I also have a piece of 1" steel plate about 3" x 5". Both seen to work well, but the steel annoys my wife as we share office space and that is where my loading setup is.

A few years ago,a friend got tired of his breaking at the handle junction. So,being that he is a master machinist,he built one himself. Stainless steel.Has not broken it yet,and he has pulled somewhere in the neighborhood of 40k slugs. All GI surplus.
    Good luck.Have fun.Be safe.

I have the Frankfort Arsenal one too, I find that the concrete step from the house to the garage makes a fine surface to whack it on, I kind of like the collet holders, but you have to keep the nut tight.

I have a spare RCBS one, happy to put it in an envelope for you if you want it...they are all about the same so free is best. Send me your mailing address by PM if you haven’t already gotten one and would like it.

That is the same exact one I have. Now going past 20 years of use. The only thing I had to replace was the o-ring that holds the 3 little jaws together

I only use the 3 jaw holder in the rare circumstances when I don't have the correct shell holder.
I give loading advice based on my actual results in factory rifles with standard chambers, twist rates and basic accurizing.
My goals for using cast boolits are lots of good, cheap, and reasonably accurate shooting, while avoiding overly tedious loading processes.

I can say with first-hand experience that if there is ever a problem with the RCBS model, they will make it right at no charge to the owner. The cap on mine gave up after a few thousand pulls. One email to RCBS and a replacement was in my mailbox a few days later. Looks a little funny since the green has changed, but functions fine.

    RCBS will warranty the hammer.
Need to pay the shipping though.
At least I think they still do.

I ordered a Uni-chuck from Quinetics over twenty five years ago. I still use it. The crimp the O-ring in place, and cut it. It stays together. You never have to replace anything.

I had a RCBS that broke. I boxed it up and sent it back to them with a note asking if it was covered by their life time warranty.
About 1 week later got a new one in the mail. Can't beat that anywhere.

Thanks much for the info the whole war and peace version. I had no idea they had anywhere near that many different designs and styles. I was looking more for a which one works better of the Typical hammer style which is probably going to suit me fine because I tend to find what I like and stick with it so I don’t pull very many bullets. Thanks much I think I’ll look up our RCBS because they sure do like it when they replace something that breaks when it’s made out of plastic.

They all work about the same so get one with a good warranty. I often use shell holders instead of collets as has been mentioned. My RCBS nut broke a few years ago; the explosion of plastic was quite spectacular. It demonstrated the need for safety glasses when using an inertia puller. They sent a new nut in a few days. Now the handle has broken but they'll replace it as soon as I get around to sending it in. It's pretty old so I don't consider it an unexpected failure. I use a column of 4x4 for an anvil. I agree that a firm grip is not good for inertia pullers; I let mine swivel between the thumb and forefinger at impact. Full, good swings get the job done with less punishment to the puller IMO than more gentle whacks.

The .380 is among the worst of candidates for inertia pulling due to the boolit weight being so light so a good strong swing is in order.

I have been using my green one (RCBS? don't know) for 40+ years. I hit the floor with it and expect to see pieces flying every single time I use it. However for some reason the flying pieces never happen.

So I guess it's good to go. I think I paid $10 for it.

I have a piece of hard maple tree trunk I cut years ago at the height to be comfortable sitting and use. I use it with the kenetic pullers and other impact type tools. Its great to lay a sheet of wad material on and punch out wads also. Probably 18-20" in dia. I did cut it a little long, when one end gets chewed up turn it over, when both ends are chewed up take it out and cut 1/4" off each end for new clean surface.

I have several kenetic pullers and don't see much difference in them other than the handles. I made one years ago but the big change in mine was the bayonet threads on the cap. 1/2 turn and cap locked or came off, saved a lot of twisting. Mine was brass and worked but did eventually bell out on the bottom. Wonder if you could by round lexan for the body?

Lexan or maybe SAR plastic might do? I'd ask a Field Applications Engineer type what they'd recommend, they know far more than I do! I've thought of trying to make a metal inertial puller, but it'd be heavier, that might make it too tiring to use it.

My first one from Midway broke. I called them and they sent a new one. I use shell holders instead of the little thingys that come with it, even though I believe it was here on this forum ( I have been wrong a time or two) that people were saying that they tried it and the round exploded. I put a clean ear plug into the puller to protect the bullet tips. It fills it well and no escaping powder particles....

I finally broke my RCBS inertia puller a while back. Don't know how many years I had used it but it was a lot. Contacted RCBS and they sent me a new one at no cost.

I have an older RCBS puller with aluminium shaft and a Frankfort Arsenal and except for the color they are identical. I suspect Quinetics makes 5hem for Midway not sure on other brands.
