Thread: Who makes a DECENT inertial bullet puller these days

Who makes a DECENT inertial bullet puller these days

I had to pull some 380s that I loaded up the other day and use my buddy RCBS vintage 1985 hammer puller . It worked great but banging that thing I was just waiting for it to break but it didn’t. Now I decided I better get my own and of course with these days everything being made out of Chineseiumplastic what’s currently I guess what you would call reasonably well made for pulling a few here and there? I’m not planning on tearing apart heavy duty heavily cramped magnum stuff mostly just pistol rounds.

I've owned and used my Quinetics inertial bullet puller since the early 1980's and am 100% satisfied with it: https://www.quineticscorp.com/produc...-bullet-puller Btw, although I use it to pull CB's from rifle and revolver loads primarily, it also works quite well with jacketed .380 and 9mm pistol rounds as well as jacketed rifle rounds that I find at our range.

The RCBS one I had broke several times. I glued it together but it’s beyond repair now. The only two that were available for me were the Frankford and the Hornady. The Hornady for me appeared to be made better and fit my hand much better. The Hornady handle is more like a hammer compared to the Frankford which is really small.
So far it is doing fine.

I have a Frankford Arsenal that has survived many wars. [shell plates from your reloading setup work great in these hammer pullers.

If I don't care about the boolit iI use a pair of cheap wire cutters with a hole enlarged just smaller than the boolit/bullet. With jacketed I have nearly 100% survival rate with cast.... not so much BUT it beats banging and it's easy to cast/coat more

Here's a hint that works well for me; I use a lead alloy ingot for my "anvil" when using a hammer type bullet puller. The lead muffins and 2"x4"x1" ingots (mostly WW alloy ingots laying around) don't soften the blow enough to make the tool not work, still enough bullet inertia, but it's quieter and less apt to break the tool. I used a Frankfort Arsenal puller for many years with a lead anvil and the only part that broke was the "nut" that held the shell holder (and I may have gotten some chlorinated brake clean on it too)...

If you want to reduce j-word bullet tip damage (to the bullet and to the puller) you can put something soft in the lower end of the puller to soften the impact when the bullet falls free (I've used a cotton ball, works pretty well.) The bullet hitting the puller especially with HP or FMJ pointed bullets is sorta hard on the plastic...

Don’t think there is much difference in the popular brands so I bought a Franklin Arsenal that has worked out fine.

I have one branded "Midway" (guess where I bought it ) I've had it for ~20 years. I put a small piece of foam rubber in the bottom of it and use a regular case holder to hold the cartridge base in the screw end. A few raps on the end of a 4x4 that I have standing up and the bullets drop right out into the foam. The only disadvantage I've ever seen with this method is that the foam traps some of the powder so I basically pull a bullet and discard all contents except the bullet. (I never know what old powders might be in there as well as what was just pulled.....however, if you use a new piece of foam with each pull...then you could use the powder over)

    my 2 cents.

I used a Frankford Arsenal inertia puller for years. Then I had to pull 150 308 150 grain jacketed bullets because of case headspace with some military brass.
No way was I going to pull that many with an inertia puller. I got a Hornady cam lock puller and the 22 and 30 cal collets. The powder was pored into a good primed case and the bullet seated. 150 only took a little over 30 min.
If I ever need to save a bunch of jacketed bullets in any other caliber, I will just get the collet for it. For cast boolits I do what Grmps does with a pair of dykes or pliers. It is just too easy to cast more boolits.

I have found that holding the puller with a firm grip is what breaks them. Hold the end of the handle with thumb and two fingers just firmly enough to hang on to it while striking. I use a piece of RR track as an anvil and have used my RCBS all plastic one for years without damage.
The loose held handle also allows the puller head to rebound faster which helps with bullet pulling. Swing very fast and allow the hammer head to rebound and even the light weight 22cal bullets pull easily.

Frankford Arsenal and Lyman make decent pullers. I have both and they're essentially the same, though I like the Lyman's handle better.

I have the same one, bought it around the same time and haven't had any trouble. I've heard of putting a pencil eraser in the end to protect the nose but I haven't used anything and haven't damaged any bullets yet.
I give it a few sharp raps to get the bullet moving and then light taps to work it out gently.

On thinking more - I wonder if that tough truck bed liner would be good for the bottom of the bullet chamber on these? It'd take the abuse from bullet tips hitting it, I'm pretty sure. Powder might stick (static electricity) somewhat though?

Looks like a Frankford that blue but this one is green.
If a Frankford cracks - take a picture and attach to an email to them with your name & address = New Free Puller

Lyman has the most comfortable handle. I have a older RCBS and a Frankford and other than the color they are the same.

I was going to post that I've got an older RCBS and a new Frankford Arsenal one that the bottom got sloped over from too much beating so I would go with an RCBS myself. I'm going to have to contact them to see if they will replace this one for me. I don't use it because of the deformity.

All of these hammer-type pullers seem to hold up & function the same. The best one to buy is the cheapest. JIMHO & FWIW...

drizler: I haven't had any problems with the RCBS one breaking. My problems have been with the collet style inserts wearing to the point they no longer hold the case back and let it fall through with the bullet still intact. They seem to multiply around here as there seems to be another in each of my trade deals. I'd be glad to send you one for the price of shipping but I just checked and they don't fit in a small flat rate box so even for free + shipping it isn't going to save enough to make it worth while. Welcome to the forum, glad to have you along. Gp
