    Black bear with .358 Win

I took a black bear over the weekend with my Ruger M77 Hawkeye .358 Win.

Load was 39.0 grains H4895 pushing a Saeco 352 (Lyman #2, Felix lube) at 2,000 fps. The shot was a whopping 30 yards. The bullet took him behind the shoulders and left a nice exit hole. The bear ran down hill about 30 yards with a good blood trail and piled up. Not a giant, but he’s in the freezer in burger and bratwurst form.

Nice shot, nice bear, nice to hear from 'ya!!

Congratulations! The .358 is a great round for cast. Easy to get it to work well.

I'm jealous!!! If you need a hunting buddy PM me!!! A Kodak is on My bucket list. I have 3 blackies under my belt. Nothing tastes better than black bear. What was your alloy mix?

Looks like a perfect shot and that cast boolit did its job. With that shot in the lungs I'm guessing he must a made a death moan?

that's awesome. Do you find that H4895 is consistant in extreme temps like it's always been advertised? I ask because I use it in my hunting ammo as well, but NC doesn't see the type of low temps you probably do in AK. However we do have 95 deg temps in October sometimes

.358 Win. doing what it does best. Killing critters dead. No fuss, no muss.
The solid soft lead bullet is undoubtably the best and most satisfactory expanding bullet that has ever been designed. It invariably mushrooms perfectly, and never breaks up. With the metal base that is essential for velocities of 2000 f.s. and upwards to protect the naked base, these metal-based soft lead bullets are splendid.

Forget everything you know about loading jacketed bullets. This is a whole new ball game!

Coincidently, I drew a coveted Kodiak bear tag this year. Contemplating using my Marlin 1895GS 45-70 with the NOE 460-530-FN. Oddly, no death bawl this time.

Edit to add: My alloy was Lyman #2.

I originally developed that load while living in GA years ago and shooting in hot temps. The groups did seem to open up a little in cooler temps, but not too bad.

I used the same bullet in my Ruger tang model .358. It did not leave as larger a hole as yours in a doe lung shot about .60 cal
currently I am casting the lee .358 mold in a 22'' Vanguard -- will use that this year Lord willing
MV was 2200 fps with cow
good on you for you bear

Courious what alloy mix you used? Looks like what ever you had was the ticket. Your boolit expanded and left a good size exit for a blood trail(if needed) as most bear hunters opt for.

Good deal! The “old” 358 racks up another one.

Makes me wish I hadn’t given mine to my son.... nah, he’s a good kid and deserves it.
