    old pistol debate over loading

I need to know, on a say flint pistol that has the ram rod attached with the linkage arms. Is the end of rod with button used to hold the rod while you push ball home or is it to push the ball. Hope this makes as I find very little info on that part of pistol. I hope I win the debate on this one!

If you pull out the rod, the linkage only allows the button to meet the bore opening.

Mine is concaved shaped t fit the ball so the button end is designed to push the ball in. It really doesn't matter so much though.

The end with the button is used to hold and the smaller end is what contacts the ball as you load.

I guess it is up to the user. do you want to push on the big end or do you want to try to push the small end through you hand? me I always pshed with the large end.

One end should be for a ball, and the other for boolit seating. This is what the old timers at the club do anyway.
    I've personally never used one.

    .

The cupped end of the RR is the ball end when loading.

Tight balls can be seated via starting the ball as above & finish seating it and then pushing the entire gun including the small end against a handy stop (tree, stone, wall, etc).

Thanks for all the info. We settled the debate with a draw thanks to you all! Use any end. I wonder if they used patches in a skirmish?
