I was given a barreled bolt action, not sure what it is...

First off, will get pics this weekend... It looks to be an Enfield style action, buttstock is attached to the rear of the action. Magazine is missing and it is fairly rough. The finish is the old black paint looking stuff. What confused me is that all of the writing on the barrel is in some asian language... I cannot see any caliber information under the **** that it is coated with.

Again, will get some pics this weekend. Just looking for ideas of what it may be.

Sounds like it's definitely a rifle of some sort ... other than that without some photos it's all just idle speculation ...

I know... speculation will give me pics to look at before the weekend. It does not seem that there are many old bolt guns with a separate butt stock.

Well, if we are going to play "40 questions" ...

IF it does turn out to be an Enfield in .303 British is the rear sight an open sight that is mounted on the barrel (No. 1) or is the rear sight an aperture / peep sight mounted on the back of the receiver (No. 4)? After that point if you could supply some photos of the action, barrel, and any markings it would go a LONG way to identifying what you have ...

Just looked at some detail shots, I think it is an SMLE No. 1 Mk. III, based on the trigger group, the receiver bridge and the forward mounted sites. Needs a ton of clean up and inspection, will also have to find 303 go/no-go gauge and check the bore. I have a No. 4 Mk. I and knew that was not it. Will post pics! I am just not sure why there is Asian roll stamping on the barrel. This is what really threw me off.

Is it Chinese writing? China was buying anything they could get their hands on when the Japanese invaded; the U.S. provided a bunch of 1917 Enfields. Mauser and British Enfield from anyone who would sell. After WW II they got a huge number of Japanese rifles and converted many of them to 8mm mauser but also left some in 6.5 or 7.7 as they had a large quantity of surrendered Japanese ammo. The "Burmese" theater was really interesting. A lot of the Special Ops tactics and forces of the Vietnam War was based on that campaign. james

Afghanistan and some neighboring states bought commercially manufactured BSA SMLE rifles with markings and rear sight range numerals in their native language.

If its an old Afghan contract SMLE even in relic condition it might have collector interest.
If the bore is good and you restore it to original condition you'd really have something out of the ordinary.
