When I was a young man working for the Wisconsin DNR, I worked with another young man who's last name was Hoppe. We became good friends and I met his father who was born and raised in Germany. When I asked him about his last name of Hoppe, he said that it was pronounced "Hoppee" with hard emphasis on the "pee". Mr. Hoppe said his name was not that common in his native Bavaria, Germany.

Well, it appears I am alone in my 'wrong' pronunciation.
I say Hope (as in Hope's #9), rhymes with pope.

But in Minnesota we do lots of things different ...Duck, Duck, Grey Duck.

    Hoppeees around here.
This reminds me of the old Benny Hill show where Benny and his wife arrive in Hawaii and are arguing if its pronounced "Hawaya" or "Havaya" in their accent. So, they ask the little old guy who is walking by is it Hawaya or Havaya and he says "Havaya" and Benny is all proud like told you so. He then tells the little guy Thank you and the little guy says "Your Velcome". lol

Wow. In all my life, I don't think I've ever heard another person pronounce it. Just never came up, I guess. When I read it, though, I read it as 'hops.'

And I read Leupold as 'lee uh pold.'
