Longbow and Bikerbeans sent me some great looking slugs to test. I’m excited to get to the ranch, but this dang weather was been ridiculously hot. Should have a break next week.

I floor boarded a deer last season with one of BB’s shoulder boulders from a circa 1899 Parker EH 10 gauge . That 730 grain .730” slug wrapped with .010” Mylar wrap shoots very well from the full and fuller choked Parker 10 gauge barrels . Let me elaborate the slug is wrapped with Mylar but it sits on top the base wad of a REM SP-10 wad with the shot cup petals removed .

730g HB slug, heat treated and powder coated

Same slug as above but just heat treated

Hogtamer's Zlug, powder coated

Fullbore 690g solid base, air cooled, hardball alloy.

The lead slugs are from accurate molds. I think the Zlug is also from an accurate mold.

730g = 1-2/3 ounces and you're launching them with 30-35g powder? What's the MV of those slugs and do you still have a shoulder after firing them?

My shoulder aches just reading this. I'd rather call in an artillery strike on that deer rather than shoot some of those. Maybe this is a good way to kill, debone and gut the critter all in one shot. All you'd have left is meat and skin.

I wont say it's a plinker, but the recoil of loads like this are not as bad as you would think. Velocities are only 1000-1250 fps or so, I can't speak for these particular slugs. Damage to deer is not bad, not any worse than a brenneke.

All 4 of those slugs are very hard and will not expand in a deer. Just punch a big hole straight thur that will leak big time. Recoil in a Marlin 512 or H&R USH isn't that bad. In a light weight pump or auto you would have your hands full. I shoot heavy slugs in the 1300 fps range, fast enough for 100 to 120 MPBR on a deer size target. IMO, none of these slug loads come close to the abuse delivered by a 2 1/4 oz 3 1/2" 12ga turkey load.

I test all my loads through a Caldwell lead sled loaded with 75lbs of weight.

That takes the fight out of the recoil.

The 512 with the sling has a 16oz mercury recoil suppressor I drilled into the stock it's 7/8" x 5" - 16 oz. http://www.mercuryrecoil.com/suppressors/index.htm#top I did that because after sighting in the scope and then testing 5 or 6 ir 8 different brands for accuracy for a total of about 50 slugs, I really did a number on my shoulder.

That TC hollow base slug is a copy of turbo1889's 10 ga. slug scaled down to 12 ga. and with no lube grooves.

I don't have a name for it and just call it my TC HB slug.

I know... that's not much help.

The short stubby round nose slug is a copy of a Crimean War style Nessler Balle use in smoothbore muskets, again, scaled to 12 ga.

So far my test results in smoothbore shotgun do not demonstrate the hype written about accuracy of the Nessler Balle in smoothbore muskets. However, it should do well from a rifled gun.

I'll see if I can bring some of this Icelandic weather back with me. It's been cool and raining for most of our trip.

It’ll be intresting to see how that slug will do in the Parker full choke barrels . But even more intresting to see how it does in my Parker with the factory cylinder and very lite modified barrels .

I got great to good accuracy with both BB and LB slugs.

Those slugs are beasts... they look like a 148 BNWC on steroids.
