    M1 Carbine

Took it out again this weekend.
Been trying different powders and cast heads.
Made up some Lyman 311359, 115gr, 309di, GC.
    Powder was I4198. 12.0
It' not the powder normally used for the Carbine.
First time using it for the Carbine.
It did very good. A little surprising to me.
    1 to 2 at 50yds, and 2 to 3 at 100yds.
Had a vertical string of 5, almost all touching.
Going to load more and see how it does.
Probably go up .5 and 1.0 powders.
Try the Lee 309120 GC boolet.

I use 4198 in my carbine, fill the case and compress as if black powder. You can"t overcharge.

    So today I tried I4198.....
    11.5, 12.0, 12.5.
At 50yds all shot almost the same. Around 1" to 2".
At 100yds, 12.0 was the top load. Around 2" to 3".
Was a little windy, so hits were a little to the left of center. But all together.
I noticed a problem. Not sure if it's the lube(carnuba red) or seating depth.
Some rounds were not chambering all the way.
Noticed some hard black gunk coming from the chamber.
Could it be the powder is to slow causing the lube to gunk up in the chamber????
Didn't have this problem with I4227.

I have shot tons of lead bullets in mine. The only powder... H110. It just works, burns clean and will not break the bank.

So far I've only used the Lee 309113F and W296 powder and I'm liking it. When it cools down I'm going to give the bandit Racoons the what for......

4198 needs more burn time, 110 is hard to beat red dot is good load to plink with saves a lot of powder.

I've been using 11 grains of 2400, under either cast or jacketed simply because I have a fair amount of that powder. The results are "adequate" at fifty yards and cycle the action, but hardly match quality. I may have to rethink my powder choice.........

I've tried a few different powders.
Don't have any H110, so haven't tried it.
    2400 and 4227 worked good.
The 4198 was just a load I found. Thought I'd give it a chance.
Works as good as 2400 and 4227.
    Just very dirty.
    Has anyone tried Acc 5744????

I use H110, 2400 or 4227. All have worked very well for me. I used the Lyman plain base 130 gr. bullet, pc'ed or not depending on what I dig out first.

You should pay extra attension, if use 4198 for reduce load with under 130gr boolit, such as under 14.0gr powder charge. may couse remain unburn powder in the barrel, 4198 burning speed is much slower than 2400, 4227, H110, W296, Lilgun etc.
I got success on H110 and W296 (those are same powder) 13.8gr and reach around 1800 fps for RCBS 115gr RN. COWW water drop from mold, GC on size to .311
M1 Carbine had 1-20 twist, so you may need to load faster MV, so will cycle action easy. avarage 50 rounds shoot at 100 yard grouping pattern should be 3 to 5 inches, if you have good eye, firm betting stock and action, smooth triiger and so on shoot better.

My Carbine shoots cast better than ANY jacketed bullet. Best, strangely enough is the Lee 93gr RN .312”, powder coated and sized .311”.
    Over 12gr of #2400, shoots 4-5” at 50yds. 8-10” at 100. Even with Sierra 110gr Spt over 14.5gr of H110, it won’t stay on a paper plate at 100yds.

Barrel looks brand new. (Underwood on Saginaw S.G. Reciever). Reworking bedding and replacing stock didn’t work.

Plan to have CMP armorers replace barrel with a Criterion.

Do any of the 32-20 type round flat nose molds work? Do they fail to feed?

I had to smooth the feed ramps on one M1 Carbine for the 311316 to feed reliably. No problems on numerous other m1 carbines or other RNFN or SWC bullets.

I've only shot jacketed bullets in my M1 Carbine. I've been concerned about lead shavings in the gas system. Has that been an issue for any of you folks?

Check your rear sight and make sure there is no play in it. You can use a longer range setting to get a little more tension on the sight to see if groups shrink. ( yes you will be shooting high).

I guess it depends on your gun. When I posted about using the Lee 113F, several folks said it jammed in theirs but it runs through my Howa like water.

AbitNutz: I shot the Lyman .311359 without a gas check for many years. I finally bought a wrench to take the gas piston apart and found virtually no leading. I cast at that time from range scrap so the boolits were most likely very soft.

What do you think accounts for that? Every time I tried to get a gas operated automatic rifle to function using cast bullets I got lead build up in the gas system, at the very least. I could usually keep the barrel reasonably lead free by using a gas check design but lead would would usually build up in the gas system.

Carbines as a rule are very forgiving when it comes to cast bullets. Over the years, I've had 28 different ones. Only one. a saginaw, had any problem with cast bullets. I shot both plain base and gas checked in all of them including a full auto M2. Velocities tend to be held to 1800 fps or less (1600 fps norm). With a good lube, it is very rare to get any leading in the barrel or the gas system.
