    M700 rebore: .308 to???

I've got a my old M700 match rifle sitting in the safe with a few thousand rounds down the tube. Still shoots CBs pretty well but no longer the 'tack driver' it once was with SMKs. Started out thinking, maybe, a rebarrel to 7-08 or .284 Win but, lately, been considering a rebore...there's plenty of metal to work with, the existing barrel is a 24" McGowan #7 Medium Target (straight taper, .875 muzzle).

Now, the way I see it, I've only two (realistic) options for the rebore: .338-08 (.338 Federal) or .358 Win. Anyone have experience with either...or both? When finished, rifle will probably never see a jacketed round in my lifetime and be used almost exclusively on paper and steel targets out to 300M or so.

Any and all suggestions and/or advice appreciated.

I'll be first to say .358 Win but I won't be the last. JES reboring will hook you up.

I'm very happy with my 338 fed.. Pac nor did the work. Cast wise it once pushed through two pigs of about 130lbs. With RD 210gr. At a 1600fps.

No question as far as I’m concerned, 358 Win gives you more flexibility and more choices.

Same story here. I had Ron Smith out in Alberta re-bore a 600 Remington from .308 to .358 Winchester for me and I absolutely love it. Lots of great already in production mould choices in .35 calibre ...

I may have passed my "Best Before" date, but I haven't reached my "Expiry" date!

Cut out existing chamber and rechamber to the most accurate .30 cal. cartridge, the .30 Br.

Dunno if that would work. Chamber cast (cerrosafe) shows a lot of throat erosion and there's considerable wear on lands...like barrel slugs almost .309 x .3015. Would have to cut almost 1.5 inch off the breech end and rethread before rechambering and, then, would still have a well-worn bore.

I agree, though, the .30BR is tempting. I've owned/shot XP-100s in both 6BR and 7BR and often considered rebarreling a Ruger #3 that lives in the back of the safe...right beside that old M700...to a Rem 'BR' cartridge.

Bill: The BR is the winningest cartridge in Cast bullet BR. comp. also a winner for shooting jkt. br. for score. It would also make a great lightweight hunting round.
