Seating Depth for Soup Cans in .30-30?

I'm loading my first 118-gr soup cans, this version from NOE, which is similar to Lee's. My first efforts are soft cast over light loads of Red Dot, Herco and Unique. Rifle: various lever actions and Savage 340.

Having messed with all manner of accuracy variables in different calibers and rifles, I am well aware that each rifle and bullet can be a mystery unto itself and that experimentation is the general rule in working out the most accurate load.

However, with this stubby little slug, I've been wondering if general experience shows trends that are worth following. Do soup cans generally like to get up close to the rifling, or are they generally better off jumping the gap, or like so much about reloading, does the question defy generalization?

I have no aversion to trial-and-error, but might save time, lead, powder and primers by knowing your experience.

i am not sure that you can get it to touch the rifling in a 30 WCF. Get it so it is straight and stable.

I put mine down to the crimp groove(Lee 113) and gentle crimp. They feed great and shoot great from my lever action and bolt action 30-30s.

I generally use the crimp grooves for what the lead gods intended. Usually works for me.

I use the crimp groove in 3006. Works great despite the jump. I would start there with.your 3030.
