Marlin 410 levergun with a twist

A 1:22 twist. I sent a marlin 30-30 barrel to JES and it was returned today with 5 groove rifling. I asked for the same groove/bore as the 405 Win/405JES, 0.412"/0.402". I will slug the barrel then get in touch with Accurate for a mold.

I still need to ream the chamber but the rest of the shotgun is ready. I have built four (4) 336-444 Marlin leverguns so after the chamber is cut a quick barrel swap and I am done, I hope.

I will be loading metal/plastic 410 hulls so the gun will be Ohio deer legal. I am hoping to push a 250g cast boolit at 1,800 fps, a load that would be way too hot for a standard 410, but this ain't a standard 410.

Pics to follow once I get it finished.

I don't remember the load now . I do know it was proportioned for 45 Colts . That's a 45 cal maxi ball in the 303 Britt brass straightened out for a 410 .
It wasn't accurate for beans but the cheap 45/410 single shot pistol had scratches for grooves .

    Attachment 222948

Just fooling about really . I believe it is a Lyman maxi ball .

Looks like Ohio now allows straight wall rifle calibers for deer hunting:

"Straight-walled cartridge rifles: New this year! All straight-walled cartridge
calibers from a minimum of .357 to a maximum of .50."

I know, I have at least ten ohio deer legal rifles, and have used several of them to good effect. I just want to build this shotgun, work up a good load and hopefully put some venison in the freezer with it. I have a mysterious affliction that makes me modify marlin leverguns.

Me and a couple buddies tried to get around the slug ony regs here in Ohio buy coming up with
all kinds of gimmicks. This was before they Oked riflings. We took a single shot 12 g and cut off
at end of chamber, took a 1919 Brn heavy MG barrel and turned it to slide inside 12g breech. This
was a 30/06 barrel about 1" in dia. we bored it in lathe to around .406" but it came out .404".
Barrel was cut 181/2" and was close to 406 when polished out. We were using tools my buddies
Dad made us. We used Marlin 444 brass and 41 mag cast pistol bullets. We fooled with bullet
Sizing and alloys. Our creation was deadly at 25yds but we couldn't hit a rifle target at 100. Then
we made a crude slug mold like standard slug and it shot very well. We pulled some factory slugs
and loaded them and it shot even better. We were going to make up 3 of the on 303 Brit actions
but only got one partially done before we were off on something else.

Considering the dearth of rifled .410 bore "shotguns" on the market, your .410 levergun and load quest is most interesting - on its own merit!

    RMc,

Rifled 410s are not as rare as hen's teeth. This will be the second one I built. The first one was a 44-410 built from a 444M handi rifle. Shot a 44 cal cast boolit from a neck reamed and resized aahs 410 hull. A friend made a fully rifled mossberg 410 and uncle dino has a rifled 336-410. I have seen bolt action rifled 410s.

Now the mad rush to finish it and get it sighted in for opening day of gun season.

Don't forget the Win 9410 . I'd bet that it could be rifled and fed some slow ,low pressure powders . At worst it could be broach rifled through the choke . Cast bullet gun right ?
Green Mountain sells a lever gun 45 ACP (this means .451-2 1-16 twist) barrel blank or a standard blank . A rebarrel on a 9410 with a 1.75 chamber to keep a 460 Smith out would just be the cats pajamas for a deal like this .
Of course a 336 in 460 would be even better ......... Mismarking and wild cats happen all the time in custom guns .

One of the reasons I had a 30-30 barrel bored and rifled to 410 is it gave me a platform that could handle >40k psi. A rifled 410 smooth bore barrel would be a low pressure only gun. Another issue starting with a 336 or 94 410 would be the cost of the shotgun. The cost of the one I am building is less than half the cost of a factory 336-410.

I personally would NOT shoot a 460 s&w 336. That cartridge runs way higher pressure than any factory chambering.

I plan to shoot cast, but jacketed would be fine.

Getting closer. I now have 200 new primed 410 hulls from BPI and one of their roll crimpers. Gonna load up some 0.410" triball loads over h110 for testing. The Accurate "slug" mold is still out a couple weeks.

The 410 reamer is scheduled to be here tomorrow so hope to have the barrel chambered and gun put together before next weekend.

Since I have an extra marlin LG 444m barrel I am going to ream it to 410 as well. This would be a 44-410 and show work with the magtech all brass hulls.

I know none of this happens without pics so I will try and post a few before long.

So, I wonder if JES can rebore a 30-30 to a smoothbore for .410?

Loads to play with till my mold arrives.

.41 cal triball load, heat treated

Remington and Winchester factory 1/5 oz slugs

    Winchester 000 3 pellets.

Shotgun is operable but needs a few tweaks to be complete

    New cartridge ID on barrel

    Slight modification to lifter timing

    Enlarge front of ejection port.

Since the OAL of a roll crimped 2.5" 410 runs around 2.2 to 2.3 inch I was able to use a 30-30 mag tube. This will prevent putting 444m cartridges in the magazine. I haven't checked to see if a 444m cartridge will chamber, hopefully if will not.

I don't plan to post powder type and charge weights of my loads. This platform will handle +40k psi loads that would probably shread most 410s.

260g LWNFB, unsized at 0.416". Pan lubed with TAC1. 1,400 fps. 60 yards, using a ammo can as a rest. Using new fiocchi 3" 410 hulls trimmed to 2.5". This is maximum pressure/velocity for the fiocchi hull and primer. Switching over to 1x winchester aahs hulls as they are much stronger. I can push this boolit real close to 1,800 fps without overpressure signs on the aahs with win 209 primer.
