Great work on this and I'm looking into replicating it as for now I'm using a couple of 5gal buckets filled with sand nested together.

Did you consider running a small cable to a carabiner and snapping to the top flange through that hole and attaching the other end to a hook screwed into the ties to help hold it up? Heck, you could do that in 4 directions and if you want to move it just unhook it and pull the trap out.

That's a good idea...but...at my age and it's weight, it's only gonna move one more time.
I think it'd make an excellent headstone and give my grandkids a good reason to go out and visit with Papa.

Very nice work a design. Me and Bro have welded up similar but never bother any finish work.
In the winter I shoot a lot of 22 pistol in basement into garage. I built simple box out of 3/16"
sheet, with a angle plate of 1/8" at back - sand in bottom. Just like the ones Outers sells for
Pellet guns and 22s. I put a twist on the design. I have heavy conveyor belting hanging like curtains from the top. Trap is 32" deep I have hung 1/8" lead sheeting behind first piece of
belting. The bullets usually end up embedded in lead sheeting , so I did away with the sand trap.

I like it too, not sure why they are disintegrating though. At that angle I figured they would still be intact when they hit the bucket.

It's COWW's with a little added Sn running @ 900FPS?
In the first test of thin plate they pretty much lumped on impact at the 60º angle and then they fragged at a 45º angle....I'm shooting at the 60º angle when I'm directly in front of the catcher.
Perhaps I made the vertical slot too narrow in the rear....at this point I can't say. I'm thinking of taking a little steel out of that gap with a sawzall, just have to get some good blades first.

See the target on the right hand side in the picture? Do you see the raised irregular shapped holes casting shadows? That's blowback of very small pieces of lead...tiny little shards that I can't even find in the grass in front of the catcher.



Both targets hung this way within the catcher as I'm facing it and shooting.

Something is causing the bounce-back...I'm guessing its the 90º angle I left on the left side (the short side) of the catcher. I'll know more after testing different angles that I shoot from...I'm sure it's not the pipe in the rear, there's no way to get a bounce-back from that area behind the slot.
I dunnoh really, it's not a problem yet but I want every ounce of lead that goes in the front door.
