locks for SPRINGFIELD MUSKET

i have a model 1861 musket and need a lock for it. will a model 1863 lock fit it? it has the clean out screw on the bolster.

M1861 and M1863 locks are the same, meaning they will fit and function, but the hammers are shaped differently. The '61 hammer is sort of an upside down "J" (a holdover from the M1855 series) and the '63 is "S" shaped.

fifty four, thank you that is what i wanted to hear! i bought a model 1863 from E-BAY then i realized the one i bid on was an 1863 model lock. i got an 1861 SPRINGFIELD MUSKET, with the clean out screw on the side of the nipple. i thought it would not work.

The nipple is broke off and somewhere along the line the barrel was filled with cement about 3" 4" deep

LUCKYDAWG - I wouldn't writ that barrel off. Unless the bolster is completely mashed up, it should be able to have the broken nipple removed and replaced - I did it a number of times on original barrels where they were abused over the years. As far as the cement in the barrel - I'm assuming it is at the breech end. If you can get the breech plug out, you may be able to hammer the cement out with a rod and mallet. If it is unable to be pounded out - use a smaller carbide cement drill and carefully drill down through the center of it and that would halve with breaking it up handout with a rod. The bore will not be pristine, but you could have it relined. Try Bob Hoyt or Lodgewood for that. All depends on how much time and $$$ you want to spend on it

LUCKYDAWG, wow!!! now that sure is a DE MILL IN THE FIRST DEGREE!! i agree with you it is a specimen for the wall. thanks for explaining the problem with the barrel.
