Hello guys!

I borrowed this mold form a good friend.

I thought it was a RANCH DOG bullet. (I see it has grease groves and the RD has tumble grooves) I had been wanting for some time. I thought it was a .358 (ish) 180G GC bullet.

It is a alum mold I assumed was a LEE, but maybe not... It is a six holler. I cast up 20# of them that tested to about 12bhn hour after casting.
Couple days back I powder coated about 50 and sized them to .360. (Looking to use in a 357Mag revolver, Marlin lever and two 357 MAX carbines.) Well, my case gauge tells me that these are too long. They protrude out the front by a good 3/32" SO, now I am wondering what bullet I actually have as this shouldn't bee the case if this is what I thought it was...












I'm not much worried about use in the maximums as I know they have long throats and being single shots length isn't a function problem. But in the revolvers and Marlin, they aint gonna work without trimming cases. Or loading in 38 spl cases...

I have the RD mold and that is not the bullet from that mold.

Are they too long for your cylinder or your gauge? Do the bullets stick out the front of the cylinder? (I quit using case/cartridge gauges when I had an epiphany; Ill be shooting the cartridge out on my barrels, not out of a gauge...).

Looks like they would work pretty well in a .35 REM.

You could make it work for your 357, warm some gas checks on a hot plate, put them in the bottom lube groove in your mold before you cast the boolit (tweezer work) -- presto shorter boolits.

Don't think that is going to work with a base pour mold.

Have you actually tried these in your revolvers and levergun? Revolver cylinders aren't all the same length. Heavy boolit rounds that I shot through an original (Monson) Dan Wesson for IHMSA were too long for my Ruger BH and my Marlin is much more picky about loaded rounds that are shorter than factory than those that are slightly longer. If nothing else, you can seat those to fit your cylinder(s) and apply a taper crimp instead of using the crimp groove...which is what I do with PC'd Arsenal 360-162s for my GP100 MC.

OOPs, you're right. You could machine 1/4 " (+/-) off the mold to make it shorter.

Uh-Uh...that won't work either. Shortening the base would have no effect on loaded OAL if he continues to roll crimp into the crimp groove.

I posted a link to a group buy mold in post #3. If you looked at that link, particularly post #47 you will see the bullet I think you have been casting. That bullet drawing was done in 2004? If you still have samples or want to copy the drawing, any of the current mold makers can replicate it for you, but it will be in a 5 cav or less configuration. I think that only Lee produces a 6 cav mold configuration.

Based upon the age of the drawing and probable production, you will have to look closer at the mold blocks for the 5 digit mold number. That will tell Lee what they made, but the numbers may be meaningless to anyone else. When the blocks are installed on the mold, the marks are on the end of one block closest to the handle hinge. On the bottom of the handles so you will have to turn the mold over to even find the numbers. If you are really lucky, it will give the information in the newer terminology as C358-180-RF.

I am curious as to the marks on the bullet on the right????

Looks like it fell on the floor and whatever was stuck to it scratched it as it went through the sizer.

Probably or it fell over when PC in oven.

That NOE 358-180 (185) looks real close and NOE does alum molds. (I have a few)
