    This forum drives me nuts.

This forum drives me crazy. I just get to the point where I figure I have a lifetime supply of smelted range scrap and then I start reading this forum and gotta go get some more. I only have about a ton now. You think a ton and a half will be enough? Two tons?

Hmm someone is not casting and shooting enough!

Depends on how old your are and how long you expect to live/shoot.

Depends on how much you shoot doesn't it? Or if you sell some to buy tools or brass or other reloading goodies.

My motto is: All I can afford, and try to have enough primers to send it all down range. Can always trade primers for powder eh?

Not going to spoil and doesn't seem to get much cheaper over time. Make hay while the sun shines and the scrounging is good.
Scrap.... because all the really pithy and emphatic four letter words were taken and we had to describe this source of casting material somehow so we added an "S" to what non casters and wives call what we collect.

Kind of hard to claim to love America while one is hating half the Americans that disagree with you. One nation indivisible requires work.

It doesn't take up much room once in ingot form. I have no idea how much I have but keep buying when I can. You just never know.

Wish Trump would open back up lead mining...

I wish they would reduce the epa regs also on lead. I go through over 300 lbs of lead a year. Making shot now has increases that. Its crossed my mind to get lead removal certifies so i can sweep up indoor ranges.

I just bought out a haul of reloading supplies from a lady who was cleaning out the estate her late father left her. Included was about 300 lbs of presumed lead ingots, different shapes and sizes. Also had some 30-06 reloads with cast boolits, and a whole bunch of other stuff. I looked it over, and said I would take the whole thing.

I still have a coffee can of used bullets from the range to smelt down, and an existing supply of COWW, SOWW, pure, pewter, and range scrap lead that amounts to probably a quarter ton. I didn't really need the extra lead, but then again this was never about need. I don't have a problem, and I can quit any time.

I have to agree with Roger.

Started out with next to nothing. Sitting on a fair stash, somewhere in the 3-400 lbs area, but I am not shooting near as much as I was either.

Stack it up. As mentioned, it doesn't spoil and it doesn't get cheaper.

go and get more if the price is right.

i'm sitting on 800lbs of WW ingots...still have 500lbs of WW to sort out and smelt .

i tell myself that under 2000lbs,things aren't that safe.

it may looks like a lot of lead, but at 500per year, that means 1000= 2 years of shooting.

i don't feel safe, so i'm on the run for more.will stop when there will no space left in the shed.

    Yeah, sure, I believe you.......

I just got back from a pistol range next door to where I shoot. A member there got permission for me to dig out the berms so he met me there today. I had visions of a couple hundred kilos, but it didn't quite work out that way . He said some of them are hopeless shooters and the lead was spread all over the place, rather than concentrated behind the targets. We had to pick it up by hand, very time consuming. So then he said do I want to check the 25 metre range, which he didn't expect to have much on it. Turns out it was better than the other range - but not by much. After that I went to my range and walked the berms, between the rain and the sheep climbing the mounds I managed to pick up 6 kilos of big stuff (BP slugs).
Total take was 64.5 kilos, but there'll be a few kilos of dirt in it too.

I don't shoot as much as I want to but I have a stash of lead that suits my needs. I buy alloy when I find a good deal but I never worry about not having enough.
My older brother is able to mine the berms at his club in Oklahoma but it isn't really mining the berms. It is basically scooping it off the top of the sand and
sifting the sand out. He brings me 300# twice a year. I still have a bunch I haven't rendered down yet. I will probably never shoot it all.

I'll always look for good deals on Lead and lead alloys.
The more I have the better the deal has to be before I'll buy more.

Just depends. It is getting harder to impossible top get free lead for casting anymore. So why not stock it up if you have access? it doesn't go bad & will only increase in value over time. So if you get to the point where you are done casting & shooting, sell it all off & take a trip.

As I got older, now 73, I sold off some of my hoard. Now down to about 900 pounds of ingots and about 500 pounds of cast in boxes just waiting to lube and size. Should last me until I have to give up the larger handguns.
