    CLOSED - MP-Molds - 165 grain 40 Caliber 2 and 4 cavity mold - Perfect bullet weight!

This Group Buy is to continue the dialog started by GoodAlloy, and is for a mold to cast 165 grain boolits for 40 cal pistols. That is, both the 10mm and .40 S&W.
The idea is 165 grains as the solid (the perfect bullet weight), but lighter as hollow point design.

I have heard back from Miha on the pricing and Powder Coat questions.
Yes, he can produce your lube groove-LESS molds, but no mixing of lube groove/no lube groove in same mold. The lube groove takes away some weight, so the powder coat/epoxy version of the solid nose will weigh a bit more than the 165 grains. The HP molds will include all three sets of HP pins, per the drawing.

First, options for mold cavities and prices:

2 Cavity Bullet Lube or Powder Coat style (no lube groove)and no mixing of types in single mold, Hollow Point, all pins, Brass - 80.75 EUROS, shipped
2 Cavity Bullet Lube or Powder Coat style (no lube groove)and no mixing of types in single mold, SOLID NOSE ONLY, Brass - 80.75 EUROS, shipped
4 Cavity Bullet Lube or Powder Coat style (no lube groove)and no mixing of types in single mold, Hollow Point, all pins, Brass - 114.75 EUROS, shipped
6 Cavity Bullet Lube or Powder Coat style (no lube groove), and no mixing of types in single mold, SOLID NOSE ONLY, ALUMINUM ONLY, 80.75EUROS, shipped
Handle, if ordered with your mold, an additional 20 Euros (25 Euros without a mold order)
These prices are in EUROS, and do in fact reflect the 15% discount for group buys.

I'm linking my perfect bullet weight comments from one of the following posts, just in case anyone skips over it, and misses the point:
Discussion about 165 grain being the PERFECT bullet weight for the 40 cal cartridges

And, here's someone else's take on the subject, with the biggest danger being one of the longer length of the 180 potentially creating dangerous pressures if seated too deeply.
Another published discussion on why the 165 grain is the best

Here are the drawings we are proposing, On LEFT is the normal boolit. On the RIGHT is the Powder Coat version.

Yes, this mold will be a Cramer style mold, with pin inserts.
The solid nose pin will yield a 165 grain boolit. We need to discuss what pins you all want.

I am relatively new to casting (6 months) and just started casting solid boolits for my 40. I am still working on the alloy for my pistol rounds - rifle boolits are working good but I think I need to soften my pistol boolits a little more. With that said I am not sure which pins I should use on this mold. I do have an MP mold for my 357/38 that has round medium and deep HP pins (as well as flat for solids). Thinking from what I have read and seen online the Penta pins work very well.

In the Speer Reloading data book #14 , .40 S&W, 165 grain bullets is the following note:
“Loads marked with approximate law enforcement loads.”

In much the same way that the 9mm evolved to be a 124 grain bullet for near perfect performance, the 165 grain bullet was evolved to be the perfect 40 caliber bullet weight for law enforcement and military use. Your tax dollars at work. I have a brief article on my web site which covers the details: WEB SITE ARTICLE

So, this boolit, the 165 grain cast, for the 40 caliber, should prove to be as wonderful as the 124 grain 9mm bullet, and the world renowned H&G #68 for the 45 ACP. I personally plan on running it as a solid nose, rather than a lighter hollow point. Everyone gets all wild eyed about hollow points, including the penta point that rdwarrior mentioned. That's all fine and good. But, remember that the hollow points are lighter than 165 grains. The group buy will be a hollow point with a couple of pin sets.

I need to get drawings made up, and hope to get that done soon. Suffice it to say, that this mold is destined to become a classic in my opinion. It will get re-run many times over the coming years. I'm delighted to be ushering it into existence, and thankful for the opportunity to be one of the first to cast boolits with it. I get ahead of myself. We need to get some names associated with it, so please..... if you have a .40 S&W that needs feeding, or even a 10 MM, get your name on the interest list. We'll need 25 orders for the hollow point mold. And, we'll need at least 13 names on the interest list before we can launch the official group buy. So, every interested person will help get this classic in the making going!

The original interest posted by GoodAlloy was a TC shape that would be 165 grains as a hollow point, and heavier as a solid. Is this going in a different direction? If so than this Lee mold would serve the purpose.

Our resident boolit designer informs me that the meplat on the initial GoodAlloy drawing would not have enough meat to support a hollow point. So, yes, it is moving in a slightly different direction. However, what is exciting about the new direction is that we are striving for the PERFECT .40 bullet. One that will historically rival , for example, the quintessential H&H 68 (45acp). A .40 bullet that everyone will talk about in years to come. It will be a 165 grain solid nose.
I have no argument with casters who choose to cast on Lee molds. However, I don't have any of those in my mold linrary
They just arent good enough for MY guns. Hope yoi can join us as we create a historical mold.

A 165 or 170 gr. 6 cavity solid brass would work for me. Nothing lighter.

Lube groove is a standard for those of us who cast and lube. However, I understand that you powder coaters or epoxy coaters want the sides more streamlined. I'd remind you that you can coat any boolit, with or without a groove, and it will perform well. If we removed the groove from this one, it would weigh more than the PERFECT 165.

However, I will ask Miha if it's possible with the same cherry. I don't think so, but I'll ask.

I would also be interested in a grooveless 4 cavity h.p. mold for pc. Miha has offered both grooved and grooveless on the same group buy.

Sorry to see you go. You could get BOTH, you know. The tax dollars that were spent to figure out that the 165 was the OPTIMUM weight for the 40 S&W were well spent. Do some reading on the subject, and let me know.

Still waiting on an answer. Every mold has it's own peculiarities. I'll advise as soon as I get Miha's answer. Thanks for your patience.
