    M1 carbine front sight removal

How to? Knock out the cross pin then tap it forward off the spline? Thanks,
    Thomas

Exactly as you've stated. If they've become a little cruddy or rusty they can offer a little resistance, but that is the sequence.

Thank you. Does it matter if the pin comes out left or right?

With pins, right to left for removal is usually the rule. It's been a while since I took one off, but I'm pretty sure that it's a straight pin and wouldn't really matter. They're in pretty tight, and it's probably best to put the barrel in a padded bench vise and grip the barrel just behind the sight. Otherwise, it becomes a 3-handed job.
