This may be part of the reason that the 9mm is so easy to shoot and so accepted by police departments world wide. The fact that you can stuff extra 9mm rounds into the gun is also a factor.
Yep, I'd suggest that the switch from revolvers to wonder 9's, decades ago, was a trade off; the simplicity of the revolver and its manual of arms, for the greater capacity of the auto 9's with their greater complexity/manual of arms. YMMV, Rod

Chronograph data for factory 9mm vs. .38 Special +P loads in 2" snubby revolvers:

    Ruger SP101 .38 Spl 2", cyl. gap 0.006"____________S&W Model 940 9mm 1-7/8" cyl. gap 0.008"

    Winchester 110-grain Silvertip Non+P__852 fps____________CCI Blazer 115-grain 9mm FMJ____1064 fps

    Winchester Q4070 110-gr. JHP+P+LE__1041 fps___________Winchestester 115-grain JHP______919 fps

    Remington 125-grain JHP +P_________886 fps____________WCC 92 Ball M882 (123-grain)____1091 fps

    Speer Lawman 125-grain JHP +P______903 fps____________Fiocchi 123-grain JHP___________1077 fps

    Ranger 130-grain SXT +P+LE________920 fps____________Geco 123-gr. FMJ_______________1064 fps

    Win. X38SPD 158-grain LHP +P _____821 fps____________Speer 147-gr. Gold Dot G2________957 fps

    Federal Hydrashok 147-grain +P+LE___922 fps

    Bottom line:

It takes a +P+ law enforcement load in the .38 Special to equal the 9mm in a snubby.
