1917 Eddystone sporter rebore at JES?

Hi all,

Picked up a Eddystone 1917 that has been sporterized. Would it would be a candidate for sending off to JES to get rebored to a larger caliber?

He once told me that he didn't do the old mausers anymore and this is around the same age.

I think you're asking all of us to tell you what JES will do or won't do.

Wouldn't it be better to go to his web site ( you'll find his phone number there ) , call him and let him tell you what he will do ? ?

A .35, .375, or .400 Whelen would be great in that 1917.

The first question I'd ask is how does it shoot as-is? Aside from having to keep it on it's own brass to contend with big headspace, my '17 sporter is about an MOA gun with cast most days:



Not many problems you can't solve with a straight-up .30-06.

But then, if the bore's toast, you can fit darn near anything in that action.

Not so much asking you all to me what he will do, just "fishing" to see if he's done any for you guys in the past.

I have heard he won't do milsurp barrels but he's the one to ask. I've had him do a .358 for me and it was perfection.

Is it .303 British or .30-06?

Either way I guess, I'd be looking at .35 or .375 I think though .444 or .45-70 should also be an option.

If you don't mind a wildcat then pick a calibre between .30 and .458 and go. If you want standard chamber and it is .303 British then .444 or .45-70 are doable and if .30-06 then .35 Whelan.

Not sure What JES rebores to but I don't think he'll do .45-70. Seems to me I contacted him about an old Marlin 1881 I have that needs some TLC.

It is 30-06. I've yet to shoot it. Once I do, I'll let you folks know how it went.

Shoot it first, these can be amazingly accurate, but if it won't shoot call up Jesse and see if he can bore it to 35 cal for you. Pick a cartridge you like (like a 35 brown whelen) and have fun. Those actions easily handle belted magnums too, and weigh enough to keep the recoil in the friendly range...

If this is a 1917 US Enfield in .30-06 caliber then think about a .338-06 conversion. All that is needed is either a reboreing of the barrel or replacement of it. Since the cartridge is the same dimensions as a `06 there is little else to do action wise.Robert
