Hello from a new member and a bit about the project that brings me here

Hey to all, this is my first post, though I have lurked around reading for a while. My experience casting lead as of now is currently limited to fishing weights and my results are not nearly as pretty as the bullets most of you are producing. I also play around with aluminum and bronze, but that is a whole other story.

The project that brings me here is something that I have been wanting to do for some time, that is to build a .510 wsm subsonic rifle. About a month ago I put in the paperwork for a bowers vers 50 suppressor, I have a savage 110 action ready, and I am in the process of moving forward with this dream of mine!

I figured that cast boolits would be perfect for this gun, but I am still researching what mold I will buy.

Anyone have any experience with a project like this? Any members have a reamer on hand... that would be a dream come true!

    Thanks!
    Tows

Welcome to the forum. I've no experience in that area, but shall watch with interest as your project develops. Remember to take and post some photos!

Welcome to our forum. So you work with brass and aluminum as well?? You must have quite a furnace to do that for metal castings as an artist or machinist. I can't give you too much help on you shooting project but can't wait to learn of your progress.

    Welcome to posting on CB
a couple of things to think about.

can you take that bowers vers 50 suppressor apart to clean it? I wouldn't run a lubed boolit through a can, I suggest looking into powder coating or HiTek coating.

As for the mold, you should first either slug the barrel, pound cast, or cast the chamber to determine the diameter of the grooves then go .001 - .003 over that for your final boolit diameter (I usually go .002) powder coating adds apr .002, and HiTek closer to .001. You can easily size whatever boolit you end up getting .001 - .004 with either an NOE or Lee boolit sizing die.
next, look at your rifling and select a mold with a boolit weight appropriate for your barrel twist (there is a range of boolit weights that work well for a certain barrel twist rate.
With subsonic, I usually go with heavier boolits but there are several different options in heavier boolits, what are you planning on shooting? Punching paper, ringing metal, hunting dinosaurs -- choose a profile/nose appropriate for this endeavor.

As you probably discovered the site's search engine ( near the top right of this page ) will give you answers to most of your questions. IF you can't find an answer, do like you did and ask (like you did here) the more detailed/specific your question the better an answer you will get. I'd be very surprised if someone on CB doesn't have the answer you're looking for.

Never take anything you read or answers you get on this or any site as 100% correct, use them as a direction for your research and find published data. what works for one person or on a specific gun my not be safe for other guns or you.

doing a photo and written documentation of your progress will get more members involved. We like pictures -pictures are worth a 1000 words in explaining some things. I like IMGUR for a photo hosting site but there are several others that work also.

Looking forward to seeing your progress and choices on this project.

The Lee 50-70 bullet mould would be an inexpensive place to start.
