45-70 barrel replacement

I need a new barrel, what’s the best barrel manufacture available now. I have a Cimmaron 4570 sharps 34 inch barrel. I shoot black power. Mine has to many machine marks and I’m ready for a new one. What’s the best twist for heavy bullets 545 gr bullets. Should it be Chrome Molly Thanks Randy C

you won't go past a krieger or bartlein. also ron smith of canada.
ron and bartlein will make gaintwist as well.
look for 6 grooves or more, rifling 0.0035 to 0.004 deep.
18 twist will likely be o.k and 16 would also be o.k.
do not get a deep grooved round ball rifled barrel.
stainless is less inclined to grab lead than chrome moly , and releases it more readily.
that is if you like the look of it compared to chrome moly.
bead blasted stainless looks good and cools better than smooth.

Thank you I will make some phone calls Monday, I don’t know how long it takes to get a barrel for black powder, Are the barrels normally 45 caliber blanks that a gunsmith needs to cut the chamber and the front sight mount and install the barrel

Who manufactured your rifle?
Cimarron sells some made by Pedersoli that have excellent barrels.
If you have a poor barrel the entire rifle barrel.from a second rate manufacturer and not worth the cost of a new barrel.

blanks that have to be chambered and fitted.
the guy at bartlein shoots bpcr himself, and knows what you are talking about.
so does ron smith shoot cast, but i think more smokeless scheutzen.
avoid reamers with a 45 degree transition, more suited to jacketed smokeless loads.
saami 45/70 has about 12 degrees and is true to odg chambers.

Well that is a data point about Chiappa.

I have a Cimarron marked Pedersoli and it has an excellent bore in all respects.

I don’t know how mine got out the door like this, I think the box says Cimarron / Chiappa / Armi sport. I may have bought it in 2012. Pedersoli had the same rifle sold through Cimarron back then but each company made them independently for Cimarron.

I called Armi sport they told me to mail it back to them they would replace the barrel if it was bad. I don’t wanna take a chance I will buy a good barrel and have it put on by the gunsmith of my choosing. I have one picked out I’m hoping to make it throughout this summer. I will have to stop in the middle of my matches to get the lead out, It shoots good until it leds up. when I get back home I will post some pictures I took with my bore scope of the rifleing.

You might want to consider either a Green Mountain, or Oregon Barrel Co. barrel, if you're not going back with a factory barrel.

how much trouble getting barrels in through customs now ? We had a guy this side ages ago used to bring in Green Mountain for a good price but no more

now that we are all terrorists, it is next to impossible.
fortunately there are import agents for most of the better brands.
T S E will make lapped stainless barrels now, and seem good to deal with.
they do more than is on their website, so it is worth a ring.
i have a .400/.408 lapped stainless 13:1 and internally it looks very good with a borescope.
it will be interesting to put a lead slug through it to feel for tight or loose spots, which the lapping should have got rid of.
the reason it is not yet fitted is that i have to design a reamer, and it just don't seem to be happening.
the intent is for it to be a 40/85 ballard pp long range rifle.

randy, buying a barrel is like buying lotto tickets.
the more you get the more it costs, but you have a greater chance of winning.
the better makers guarantee internal measurement to thongs like 0 + 0.0002" with the muzzle being the tighter end.
krieger will on request put up to 0.0004 choke in a barrel for you.
this is ideal for lead bullets, as well as jacketed.
you squeal once when you pay for it, but only laugh after that.
of course you need it fitted by someone whos skills are up to the standard of the barrel.
if the guy just uses a 3 jaw chuck, steer well clear.
the guy to speak to at bartlein is frank green.
