    86 the Antimony content

wouldn't it be nice if there were a simple way to remove antimony from lead? I am introducing a young person to the joys of Muzzleloading and want to cast up a big bucket of Lead round ball. Most all of my lead has antimony alloy in it.

    Just thinking out loud.

back when I hunted with a 50 cal round ball I casted a bunch out of a mix of stick on and clip on ww and they shot just fine.

Easier to dilute than to remove. No scrap yards in your area? That is part of the fun of bullet casting.

Can the "let the melt cool and dip out what cools first and repeat"process really yield a product with a lower percentage of antimony?

I think that someone is confusing zinc or copper contamination with the antimony which is in solution.

It works (sort of) for Zn, but once an alloy is made, it is darned near impossible to separate elemental metals out of it without a lengthy and expensive lab process.

Just let your BP castings cool in the air and do not water drop to cool and that will keep the hardness created by the Sb at a minimum. Sounds like from the above post that a little Sb is not gonna hurt you at all.

Or swap and trade for pure Pb on here. When I want pure, I just go to my local scrap yard and get as much clean lead sheeting as I care to buy. They are happy to sell it to me!

When I read the title, I though you found some alloy with 86% Sb

What is the origin of that association? Anyone know?

Where does the phrase 86 it come from?
Perhaps its origin lies in New York. Many stories back this up. There was a speakeasy bar at 86 Bedford Street in Greenwich Village called Chumley's, with no address on the door and several hidden exits. When the heat showed up, guests were known to 86 it, or remove themselves from the premises immediately

I found this by googling 86 that.

Google (apart from it's e-vil embedded tracking things) is your ultimate source for ANYTHING you may want to know. Use it every time you have a normal question on anything. I do. Questions answered immediately, rather than waiting around for some "answer" on here.

Or, if you want to know about getting kicked out of a bar, ask Larry.

Back in my younger days in Oregon I ran security for a couple "establishments" numerous times when they had big name live music or "adult" entertainment. Worst was when they had the Chippendales or the Aussie knock off group......I could tell some real tales of how crazy the woman go at those shows.......

Myself? Never been thrown out (86'd) of a bar.....stateside anyways........

As long as you are using a patch the ball doesn't have to be soft. It does help with terminal ballistics when hunting, though. When shooting cap and ball revolvers you need pure or you can break the loading lever.
