    Pewter Haul

I was doing a job 200 miles from home this week and had to pass through CT (I hate CT...idiot drivers...but I digress) Since they have a reputation for being such upiddy snobs, I figured they might have some good pewter donations so I checked out a local "Savers" donation center. I got 9lbs 12 oz of hardware for $33. Not a bad take if I do say so. I'm up to about 15lbs of Pewter now....I think I'm safe to slow-down a bit...that should last me for the next 5 years.

Nice score. You also sound like you have more discipline and sense than I do. Unfortunately I'm beginning to treat the collection of pewter like that for lead: once started it never stops, and I am never convinced I have enough.

Haha...I wouldn't say I have discipline as much as I'm running out of room to put stuff. I have over a ton of COWW, Range Lead, and Linotype. And now....Pewter. Fortunately, I only need a small amount of pewter to add to all this other stuff so...15 lbs every 5 years should be enough...however....If I'm in a donation store again and see something good...I won't pass it up.

Good find. last pewter I found (4.2#) was a buck a pound at the scrap yard! I was smashed modern food service ware.

All the "thrift" stores around here think the stuff is silver and charge a fortune for anything stamped pewter.

Nice Score! Pewter is hard to find around here. Most of it is priced at antique prices. I have to depend on yard sale and flea market solder for my tin needs.

Yep, Savers is one of my known enablers. Sorry that their Henrietta NY (near Rochester) closed recently.

Figure I have about 20 lbs. now. Pretty much cleaned out the local places. Got 300 lbs. of nice clean lead to alloy it with. If it's heavy and malable I buy it.

Up here 90% of what you find are "modern" tankards for around $3/lb.

Last time i checked i was around 70lbs with no intention of stopping

It is a good currency for buying or trading.

I'm with you, Retumbo. I probably have enough to alloy 12 tons of lead, but I'd buy more if I saw it in a shop. It's always good "currency" in a trade.

If you notice my picture....most of my Pewter is bent up....I do that on purpose so the wifey doesn't get any ideas. I generally store up enough to melt at one time. But with the Pewter, I'll just do it in small batches since I don't have/need that much of it.

And yeah...you guys convinced me...I'm gonna keep buying....its good to trade or barter with for sure....especially during a zombie apocalypse. I'll just have to get rid of the wife's shoes in the closet to store all the ingots. I'll make space for it. haha

Unfortunately my wife wouldn't know pewter from pewteret. And I'm sure I'd end up with a pile of Wilson - Our Daily Bread platters. They are everywhere.

I remember reading it has aluminum in it. It doesn't melt right.

There is a lot of great info in the Hallmark sticky thread...but its a lot to weed through. I also did some Google investigations. I stay away from all the Wilton RWP stuff from Columbia PA. (sorry...I typed Wilson before...its WILTON)
