I do t know of any solutions but I would agree that your lead being soft it will get banged up much easier. But I will add that Dr. manning in his book mentioned his testing of deforming the nose of bullets and deforming the base. From his testing he explained that with the base being the sterrring end deformation of the nose causes negligible accuracy changes but deforming the base caused his groups to open up wildly. I wouldn’t worry about it too much unless it’s pushing the boolit into the case and over pressurizing the round.

I think I’d try casting them harder, what alloy are you using?

That makes some sense to me, as the nose deformation is closer to the rotational centerline of the bullet while the outer edge of the base is farther away from center. More likelyhood of vibration the farther from center...

As to my alloy, I confess I just threw some-of-this and some-of-that in the pot this time. No idea what the mix is... I may remelt some of it and add some shot to get some antimony in there and harden it up a little...

Not sure 100% why the nose doesn’t affect the accuracy more but I know because of the way the gas escapes at the bottom of the bullet as it exits the barrel is why the base is so important. Basically if you have a nic in the bottom of bullet it’s just as bad as a big nic on the crown of your rifle which kills accuracy.

Why would you want a gas check, especially if coating? I see these as being low velocity. I’ve never used gas checks before, haven’t seen the need yet, but i don’t push any of my cast loads super hard yet.

I think Mihec found out on an earlier page that the GC contributed to better accuracy.

From a "leading" perspective you are right, but I think it helps with accuracy in this case.

Drew P I actually have a load for the NOE 311 247 at almost 1600 FPS and several at 1425 FPS.. PC coating out of a barrel only is no issue with leading at all
now add a suppressor and with the unsupported gaps as bullet passes thru suppressor you can get gas cutting and leading in the suppressor . Add a Gas check and no/less issues and yes accuracy increases

Ah interesting. Makes sense. Hmm, gas check increases accuracy. Hmmmmm. I never knew that. Aside from maybe eliminating accuracy issues caused by gas cutting of course.

Gas check can increase accuracy if you have less than perfect bases. Fellows who want the best accuracy with cast will use a gas check because it is flat and concentric so it can correct small defects in the base of the boolit. Like I said earlier the base is the steering end of the boolit so if it is perfect you will have good accuracy. Other factors contribute to good accuracy but a perfect base really helps. I played around with this concept once and loaded some supers with less than perfect bases and some with gas checks and pushed them at 1,200fps. The difference was 7” spread without gas check and 2” group with at 50 yards. Mine were lubed not PC

Any potential for the check to come off and cause a baffle strike?? My plans were to use this with a can. I've never cast for rifle or used a check.

If you add the check First then PC I don't think theres much of a chance it will come off
I got a couple 100 down the tube with no issues
