Got my new RCBS lube sizer today, and got a little extra ...

I bought it brand new (on special!) from Midway. The inside of the box had small metal pieces:




Upon checking the actual main unit, it felt as it had "something" inside of the main lube tube, so I open it up. Guess what I got? Yup, lots of metal particles - the same ones that were inside of the box:



I guess it was machined, and they were in a hurry to pack/ship it, and never bother cleaning the chips. Here is a close-up:



A "little" disappointing, but it was trivial to clean-up. Everything is all clean now, and I hope to use it this coming weekend for the first time

That would be great to push some of those chips thru the lube
and into a nice polished die.

I would definitely call RCBS.Normally a machinist has a high pressure air hose at the machine to blow chips off of a part after machining.The parts would then receive further cleaning the remainder of the work on the part and before inspection.

Yeah I'm not sure I would accept that. A phone call to RCBS should be on the short list.

Thats rather disappointing but it seems to be the "new normal". Since you got it cleaned up I probably would load it with lube and try it out. Calling RCBS just to let them know might also be a good ideal.

I have been very pleased with my RCBS lubers, but I do agree that you should write or email after your phone call to document the condition of the unit when received. Then if something shows up later, you have already alerted them to a potential production problem. It would be regretted if you later find a missed chip has worked through the sizer and is stuck in a lube groove that then is shot down a nice pristine barrel. Good catch and thankful that you found it and are able to alert others to the potential problem. Dusty

I'd run some pipe cleaners, if you can find some, through the lube gallerie/channel to make sure none are stuck in it. I'd probably flush them with a stick of lube after that just to be safe. My guess is if they skipped cleaning the chips out, they probably didn't hone or polish the reservoir either.

Now that I think about it, I wouldn't be surprised if that one was made right about the time of the flood.

Heard back from RCBS. Looks like I am good to go after a good cleaning of the unit:

"These chips left in the LAM casting are chip after machining. My product down back is supposed to be washing/ rinse the casting before assemble. Use gun degreaser that has a light lubricate and spray down in the LAM casting to remove the cast chips out. Then use air compressor to blow all the excessive chips out from the casting. You are safe to use the LAM bullet sizer press. "
