I did the mercury capsule to my 300 HH back in the 80s. Turned the sharp kick into just a good push! Loved it!

Gave $800 for mine several years ago, it won't be there at that cheap price very long?

With the Ruger 77 .458 Mag I have found that with the heavy recoil I would occasionally have my trigger finger driven into the front of the trigger guard depressing the magazine release and dropping the magazine load of rounds onto the ground. The thought of facing an angry Cape Buffalo needing a second shot with all of my ammo on the ground did not leave a warm fuzzy feeling with me.
    Good judgment comes from experience.

That would be bad. Hinged floor plates are overrated imo. On a heavy kicker i would opt for a lever release or pin the release button in. Mauser floorplates and blind mags work great for the kickers.

With that long throat you talked about I would sure second the idea of shooting BP in it with at least a 405 RNFP in it. A poor man's .45-90 for sure. GF

    Well, I bought the rifle.
It will take me a couple of days to get it picked up and a few more to get the reloading supplies together but when I happens I will post some picks and results when I get some.

A guy I met at the range several years back had several Dangerous Game Rifles. My favorites were the Ruger 458 Win Mag and a very nice double in 404 Jeffery. He had cast loads for all the rifles and told me that the big bores were great candidates for cast lead. On the big ones like his Rigby he used fillers. I shot the Double and the Ruger with one full tilt round each and the rest were cast.
For killing paper you don't need full snort loads.

Good decision on buying it at that price. Not my cup of tea as the range is too limited at the recoil level I can tolerate. Great caliber, when downloaded, for close in work on medium game at short range. Nothing in my neck of the woods that would ever need full power loads anyway.

    Nice buy!!

I plan to eliminate all the woolly mammoths and mastodons from Illinois with it.

I recommend that you wack all the woolly rhinoceros and saber tooth tigers too,
as the former keep leaving huge road apples in my yard, making lawn mowing a chore,
and the later keep chasing the local bunny rabbits around.

My first 458 WM was a CZ 550. It shot very well and i too loaded it down with 405 grainers at around 1300 fps. It did what is reported here at 50 yds. Clover All day long.

    HOWEVER !

Then i had a 77 Ruger chambered in their 375 Ruger. So having a take off 458 WM barrel, i had it installed on the 77 frame. It shot OK but with the nasty long throat i never got the accuracy i got with the short to non existent throat on the CZ. AND the CZ would hold 4 in the mag and 1 up the spout which gives plenty of confidence with Buff, Grizz, Rino or water Buff around your AO.

Cant wait to read about your first intro to your cool rifle. Have a blast (pun intended).

I however bit the bullet (so to speak) and bought some full power solids in Federal factory loads just to see what all the hubab was all about. Ill say that everybody needs to shoot a few of these just to experience them ... MAN!!!

Now i see the wisdom of opening the WM chamber to the Lott chamber. It removes the huge throat with case and God forbid ... more powder capacity.

    They ARE all THAT.

I shot full power loads through a Winchester model 70 African model back in the 70s. My shoulder still aches when I think about it.
I don't need to remind myself how much it hurts.

You'll be happy you did. They are beautiful rifles, built like a tank, and it will shoot well using 45-70 loads. Let us know how you enjoy it.

    Take care, Tom

I shoot Lee 500gr boolits in my Parker Hale .458 (rechambered to Lott). I actually use a slightly lesser load than with 500gr jacketed and get great accuracy out to 100 yards.

IMHO Buy the cheap Lee mold then spend $ on a Decelerater recoil pad and shoot the rifle.

I bought one built on a .17 Enfield about a year ago. It's a 12 pound rifle and proportionately big through the stock. Haven't let her rip with full power stuff but that Lyman 500 grain round nose and about 17 grains of Unique is a trap door level load and a lot of fun.

Shoot it yet? A 375 H&H cast shooter does interest me, but my '06 does a good job on whitetails and we don't have anything bigger around here. But, if the Smoky Mountain Elk ever make their way down to my place...

During the last month, I have been running a variety of cast through this rifle in an attempt to get a load that will shoot reasonably accurately.
    No luck. None.
I have tried four different cast boolits and different powder with varying loads. No luck.
The best I was able to accomplish was a 5 shot group at 50 yards that measured about 2.5 inches and hit about 3 inches high from where I was holding. Not too bad.
I then moved back to 100 yards and fired 7 more shots. Only 3 of them hit paper. We are talking 17" x 17" targets here.
I have tried diameters from .458 up to .460. The boolits are cast with linotype. These are all light loads. There is no leading in the barrel. It is pristine. The heaviest charge was 20 grains of Unique.
I tried different seating depths to no avail. I used standard length loads with all the boolits I had and then tried moving them forward.
I took into account the freebore on the barrel and even set the boolits up to be slightly off the lands. This made for an extra long OAL since there is nearly half an inch of freebore in this barrel.
I tried different seating depths to no avail.
I give up. This rifle is going down the road. I can't afford to shoot jacketed in this thing and I don't want a safe queen.
