45/70 Muzzle Flash Loads?

Hi guys and gals.

I’m working on a little 16.5” trapper 1895 Marlin.

I’m wondering if anyone has suggestions for some good fireball throwing powders?
I imagine anything on the slower end of the spectrum is going to toss some flames.
I’ve heard H335 is particularily flashy.
Any other suggestions? I know some modern powders have flash suppressants so there must be some older powders completely devoid of that.
I know I’ve touched off some old S&W branded 357s that I swear were loaded with lightning bolts instead of powder.

I’m just looking for something to snap a couple of high speed pics of.

3130 seems to give some good muzzle action... Or H110 gives great flames out the end on my wheel guns...

FF blackpowder!!!!!! will beat any smokeless for a muzzle flash show.....

Hodgdon's Bl-C(2) gives a huge muzzle flash and blast in my 24" barreled 300 Savage. My lot is very old. Not my favorite powder for this and other reasons. It will work in the 45-70 if for some reason noise and flash are important.

My guide gun used to have a big fireball with 300gr bullets and H-4198. I think the light bullets prevent all of the powder from burning in the barrel. 405gr bullets with the same powder don't do it.

H335 will light up the sky. Nightblinded my brother and I from a 18-1/2" 6mm Reminton Mohawk 600 when he shot a coyote one night. In my old 16-1/2" Arisaka 8x57mm the fireball was a good 5 foot in diameter. Great powder in the daytime, though!

Yeah... BP! I used to load Lyman 457124's (385 gr.) for my 1895 over as much FFFg as I could get in the case. Lots of fun! Lots of boom! Lots of flash! Lots of smoke! Lots of nice BP aroma! Not a lot of recoil. But do clean up brass and gun after.

AA2200. Max load with 300grn bullet.

In my 445sm, 20 inch barrel, AA1680 makes a fireball you can see in bright sunlight. Barnes has data on their website for 45-70 using lighter .458 bullets. I don't remember if the data is for an 1895 or Ruger#1.

Another vote for AA2200. My Guide Gun throws a huge flame using it.

I would imagine a slow burner like Varget near max load would give you a fireball... And a stiff shoulder...

I was shocked when I fired my first 5744 loads in 45-70...I could see a fireball in broad daylight!

And this was with only 40gr under a 300gr jacketed bullet.
