Interest in .459/.460 300gr Flat Nose for Leverguns?

    Hey there!

    I have a clone of a Winchester 1876 in .45-60 WCF, which works fine and accurate with a 295/300gr Flatnose-Boolit w/o GC.
I have a german Custum Mold from "Hensel", but it's one cavity (they make 2 cavity also, but are relatively expensive). Also a HP-Version will be really nice.

Is there any interest for a MP-Mold GB for this? There is a RCBS Mold on the Market (45-300-FN, Part No. 82051), but it's a single cavity also.

I am interested in any 45-70 boolit I can get my hands on lately. Some issues we would have to work through:
    1) Crimp groove- they don't serve my purposes, so I am not interested if required.
    2) HP molds require Miha to order a minimum of 100 pins per GB, with 2-cav option that means 50 molds on order till last call. Are there that many folks out there interested?

An option might be to combine with my current 400gr mold, and if the pin design was exactly the same, the pins could be ordered combined together.

    Let me know your thoughts.

Crimp groove is not required. I prefer plane base, gas check option will be good, but I don‘t need one.

    HP-option is not a must-have.

    Specifics of my mold:
    1. Diameter .459,
    2. over all length of the boolit 19,5mm / 0,767inch,
    3. lenght of the ogive: end of the straight wall to the flat nose ends: 9,15mm / 0,360inch, the nose has a diameter of 7,40mm / 0,291inch,
    4. as cast weight round about 295gr (WW).

Here are some pics of the boolit I cast with my custom mold (fyi: boolit is light tumble lubed):

This sounds good, definitely one that I will help design up and see if we can get traction to go active. Give me a day to work on the design and we can start talking around it.

I think this represents everything you are suggesting, but the weight with WW comes in at 310gr. Lyman #2 is 304gr. Getting to 295 will require some shaving... What is the diameter above the top band? I put .451" but maybe this can be reduced.

I measured the dia above the top band is .445. How much you have to shave at the bottom of the boolit to come in at 300gr?

Other idea: both lube grooves a little wider and centered in the straight part of the boolit.

That would depend on how many HP pins were offered. I just got a 2 cavity 500 that had 3 sets of pins, 27 people

Sorry, I should have been more clear- the new requirement from Miha is 100 pins of each type. So if a mold has 5 types of pins, the total pin count needs to be 500, so that there are 100 or each type.

That sucks .......... need to bump up cavity's on molds now. I want to see about starting a 413-265 WFN GC. cant find a good 41 mold. There's one in singleactions but no movement in a while

And that should be the direction. Anyone wanting an HP should be willing to spend a few extra bucks for a 4 cav mold vs a 2 cav. There is no longer a cheap path toward a high quality, custom mold like Miha offers.

So, I have a request into him already to see if a large 45-70 boolit will fit in 4 cav with pins. Some larger sizes just may not fit in the boundaries of the mold....

No, all existing GBs stay as last call at 20. But any new will need the higher volume.

Maybe this way (I worked your design a little with Paint, sorry - but here you can see what I mean) - a little shorter bottom and wider and centered lube grooves:

I followed your direction and it does look good but I would suggest a small change, to add a few 10ths to the length of the top band. This would allow variance in AOL for any cartridge and allow users more land area for a roll crimp if used in 45LC. What do you think?

What about inculding the top band in the nose (you know what I mean?), like so:

Name:	45-300-custom.jpg
Views:	23

and cut a little at the bottom? So we save weight and the room is bigger for the crimp. So we have a "wide flat nose" type?
