35-30 or 38-55?

I'm thinking hard about another JES rebore. Winchester m94 from 30-30 to one of these.
Both have the cool factor, the 35-30 has more moulds available but the 38-55 is a factory round.
Any advice from real users?

I couldn't make up my mind between a .32-40 and a .38-55, so I split the difference.

I went with .35/.30-30 with 16" twist. I don't use pistol bullets, but purpose cut bullets for the cartridge.

Most of the time I load plainbased bullets at black powder velocities.

Easiest way to make .35/.30-30 cases is to get the Starline 2.085" length .38-55 cases and neck them down.

I'd go with the 35-30 also. Donor brass readily available, and molds are plentiful. Iv'e been thinking of doing this for a while now...let us know how your project works out.

What do dies cost for the .35-30? How hard is it to form brass?

dies are pricey like over $100, that is the drawback but mine shoots very well. I have both 38-55 and 35-30, similar effects. When I first sized 35-30,.I split a few necks trying to do it im one step. Now I run them through a 32 special die, then the 35-30, and no more split necks. Have fun with either one.

No longer own my Glenfield 35-30/30 but mine was 1:14 twist. I liked ut, but a friend liked it more. He has taken 3-4 white tail with it and I believe took it hog hunting in TX. I always fire formed brass. Dies were readily available from CH4D and I believe Lee.

Having said that, I have always wanted a 38-55 or 375 Win and would probably go that route.

I am intrigued with this .35 - 30 but have no experience with it. Jes did just convert one of my Win 94's to .38 - 55 and I'm in the initial stages of load development. The Lee .375 mold is fantastic so far. I also have a werido mold with no markings that produces a 312 grain loverin style boolit that is working very well. I expect both to be game getters. Further, I am having success with the Sierra 200 grain .375 bullet. They all shoot well. Again, in the development stage. One thing to remark about, Starline brass is "light" for the 200 gr. Sierra bullet and I'm awaiting a shipment of Winchester brass to try. Jes' work is without peer. He does a fantastic job. Two of my friends are in the process of having .38-55's made because they like mine so much. Good luck.

Easier to neck down Starline .38-55 than to neck up .30-30, which may split unless you mouth anneal.
I got Redding dies, which are pricey, but have long, tapered 7-1/2° expander which brings annealed .30-30 brass up in one pass with no loss. MUST anneal before expanding! Otherwise just neck size the Starline 2.085" .38-55 brass, easiest way.

I prefer using brass that is properly head stamped so I would go the 38-55. JES claims a rebore to 376 which is also a plus over the older rifles that could be from 377-380+ . That takes away a lot of the issues with a 38-55 and does permit the use of 375 J bullets where you can find them. Vollmer also makes good bullets for the 38-55 is a variety of offerings. As you are using a 30-30 action the 38-55 can be loaded up to a pretty stiff level. Either is a pumpkin slinger so the any extra range of one over the other is not much of an issue.

I have taken deer with the 38-55 and Barnes originals and the 35 Remington. I doubt if you could really tell any difference. The JES rebore would be great with the Barnes bullets.

The SAAMI standard .38-55 chamber and cartridge drawing are an example of poor engineering.
If you do not control the results by your own specification you can get what H&R got with their Target Model.
The Target Model groove diameter was about .380.
WW factory brass was about .0095 thick at the case mouth.
The chamber needed to be about .400 at the mouth.
The chamber was actually .397 and was too small for WW brass when used with .381 bullets.
Fortunately Starline started making .38-55 brass that is .0075 thick and it works in the sorry H&R chamber. But I have 400 new WW cases that i cannot use without turning.

38-55 for me. Donor rifle is in the safe. Just gotta stop spending the funds on other shiny toys! The older the better for me!

I went with the 38-55 and it shoots 250 gr .376 boolits **** fine. I thought of the 35-30 just for kicks, also went with the 405 Jes shoots great, taken deer with the 405 and squirrels with the 38-55 head shots aren't a problem either!

Please tell me more of the 405 Jes. What diameter bullets and what basic brass?

Given similar CB loads/boolits at about the same speed, the .38-55 makes a more severe wound than the .35-30 does.
(I don't, at age 71 enjoy trailing wounded game, so I'd pick the .38-55 for hunting. - That said, my younger brother has a rebored Model 94 rifle in .35-30 & LIKES it for hunting the brush country.)

That 405 JES is an intriguing option, but I am very happy with my JES re-bore Win 94 in 38/55. It has become my truck rifle in bear country to supplement the sidearm(s).

Just traded for a Marlin 3080 30-30 with the forearm metal cap. My best friend doesn't know it yet, but it's going to JESS to become a 38-55 and his Christmas present this year! He hunted with mine last year and told me, this would be a great Christmas present for me brother! The scope is on him!
