I had a 16.5" 8x57mm. Very handy, very loud. Everyone in deer camp knew when I shot! I also cut down a 788 .308 like you describe for my niece and she promptly took a huge Panhandle WT buck with it.
The .358 would be fine with a short barrel.

Me too, but much to my dismay, it no longer sports the iron sights. It's a great shooter. 6mm Rem ammo is hard to find, and this was one of the reasons I started reloading.

OP here- I'm dredging up this old thread.

I finally got the time - and the inclination - to shoot this 788. I wanted to shoot factory ammo, to check zero prior to cleaning and going to cast.
I had some Winchester 150gr PowerPoint from the 1990s that I got in some forgotten trade. I set up at 50 yds with an improvised rest, just to get on paper.
The first 2 rounds got me on, then a scope adjustment and 3 more rounds.

    Oh mercy me.

I moved back to the limit of my backyard range, 75-80 yds. 6 shots into about 1 3/8" (sorry, no pic).

Now I'm worked up about this rifle.

    Ha!

Had mine out today, trying some plain based boolits with Red Dot.
    Nice cluster at 50 yards.

However, got much better groups with the NOE 165
ranch dog, gas checked, lla & jpw and IMR 3031.

I've tried to take a quality picture of this
rifle, so Texas by God could admire the walnut,
but no luck. One of these days.......

I have owned several of these little gems. Bought a 223 new in the 70s. Still own it. Doesn't shoot as well as it did new but then again it has maybe 5000 rounds through it and my eyes are 50 years older. Still will shoot into an inch. I bought a used 243 for a friend and when I delivered it, along with some sample groups, he asked what to reload it with and I said "go to the store and buy 5 or ten boxes of Rem. factory loads and never look back." It shot under an inch with those loads. Great gun for the money(when new) now they are crazy priced for a gun that has been out of production for 30+ years.

Someday I'll get another 788. I don't really care what cartridge, either. Thanks for the thought FredBuddy!

That plus the receiver was extremely stiff and the multiple locking lugs helped as well.

For a rifle that was supposed to be Remington's "economy" rifle - it sure was well made. They might have been inexpensive but I would never characterize one as "cheap".
