    Lyman 410610

The Postman delivered a used mold to my house today

    A Lyman 2 cavity 41 cal 215gr SWC-GC.
It had some mold release coating in the cavities, but other than that, the mold looks like new. I tried to clean them out (toothbrush/hot water/dishsoap), but I only got about half of it out.

I heated up some COWW alloy and boy oh boy, the mold didn't want to release the boolits what a pain.
Also, due to the partial coating still in the cavities, the boolits look awful. I tried alloy temps from 660º to 710º as well as, casting slow, then casting fast...still ugly, still sticky.

I can feel one nasty burr on the edge of the cavity that was the worst offender of boolit sticking.
I figure I'll try a light scrapping action on that burr then I'll Lee-ment it.
Luckily the mold came with what appears to be a lifetime supply of GCs...I don't have much use for GC in 41 mag ammo, but a few would be nice, if my Marlin or Henry will cycle this boolit.

Once upon a time the #410610 with 296 would make 25 yard clover leafs in a Redhawk.
Now I shoot a light weight .41 percussion revolver instead.

But what I really wanted to say was to ask if you have found out what the cleaned up full diameter as-cast is going to be.
    I've found some undersized ones.

My 410610 also clung to the casting, I polished it out and now it drops nicely with most any alloy combo I have used. I did find that the GC shank was very much too large to take Hornady checks. I ordered and received a stock of aluminum checks from a custom supplier here on CB. Works well now and my Marlin 1894FG likes them.

Undersized boolits from Lyman molds (for the average cast shooter's use) is a common theme, I have had one that I recall, it was a mold I got within the last year. It was a older single cav Lyman 41 cal round nose (I can't remember the number? but it was on the heavier side). Boolits dropped at .410 (or a hair under) with COWW, which is undersized for my use. That one got sold.

The boolits I cast yesterday, were .412 and I am tickled about that, If it cast too small for my use (.411 is what I size to), I would NOT have even been posting about it, I would have just set it aside to sell at a later date.

Adding to my state of being tickled, is that it came with a fairly large lot of GCs in a unmarked box, more than I'll ever need, I suspect? They are Brass colored and fairly thin, I am reasonably sure they are old Lyman product...but best of all, fit snugly and go on easily with finger pressure.
