    Hogs vs deer

What do you different for hogs compared to deer with boolit choice and alloy? Still looking for very soft metal that will expand? I have a choice between a 35 rem load with a 213 grain boolits at 1700 fps or a 3006 load that has a big meplat and 198 grains at 1900 fps. Which would you pick for hogs, since I think both will whack deer?

Either will work well. Maybe a little tougher alloy. I usually run 50/50 wheel weights and range scrap for hunting (165g 3006 and 200 grain 45 acp carbine). Large hogs have much more muscle and denser bone than deer, but I think most hog fables are actually due to shot placement. The classic behind-the-shoulder deer shot is too far back on a hog and will mostly hit liver. Heart is further forward directly above the leg.

Hogs can be strange to kill sometimes.
I’ve killed them easy with #4 shot from a 20ga or with a 22 long rifle.
I’ve had them just walk off like nothing happened when getting shot with a 7mm mag and a 170grRN at 70 yards. Only to recover it with a double lung shot and the bullet lodged in the opposite side.
Some, not all, boars will have a shield that is virtually impenetrable. I had one take a 30 yard shot from a 30/30 with a 150gr bullet that never penetrated into the chest cavity. After cleaning it I found my bullet and 9 buckshot in the shield.
In general, I treat the hogs the same as deer as to bullets and shot placement with the exception of large boars.

2nd the same load for hog or deer.I've found for hogs a shot to center of the neck to be most reliable at putting them down.May need a 2nd shot but if it hits close to the spine it'll put them down.Hogs don't stand still very long and may move any direction. That's how I take them anyhow.

I would use either boolit it and put it in their ear hole.

Decades ago my brother got tired of east Texas rhinos leaving the scene of the grime and taught himself to paper patch soft swaged 500 grain wopper stoppers.

Awesome. I have to hop state line to whack hogs, but if they were a habitual nuisance I probably would buy a 45/70 or a 458 socom and whack em hard.

Either should work. You don't need a howitzer. My pig thumper is a 6.8 AR. 115 gr Federal Fusion in the neck = bang, flop. Draw a line from the front shoulder to just behind the ear and put it along that line.

Either will work my deer and hog loads are the same ,wide meplant and about 12-13 bh holes in the booker room equal dead. Remember hogs vitals sit farther forward in the thoracic cavity . The front shoulder /neck shot is very good. In the ear is best. Hunting from a stand they really aren’t any different than deer to kill , if they have been bayed by hounds and their blood is up they can soak up lots of lead and be extremely mean.

I have to agree with the others, either cartridge/bullet combination should be fine. The BEST hog thumper I've ever used is my 45-90 Sharps with a 480 gr. NEI bullet cast of 25-1 over 80 grs. of real black. That particular bullet has a 35-38 cal. meplat. Think really long Keith type semi-wadcutter. 'Course that load combination has flattened everything I've shot with it. I've also had good luck with 9mm and 9.3mm shooting heavier cast bullets for caliber, I think about 240 for the 9's and 275 for the 9.3's. It's the same as any other game, it's more about where you hit them than what you hit them with.

i kill most of my hogs (could kill several a day if i wanted) with a .223 or .357 mag. either does fine. i like to put it through the shoulders. the boars do have a "shield", but it isnt armor plating as some would have you believe. even an arrow goes through even the largest hogs with ease.

After shooting a bunch of them my favorite shot is a spine shot anywhere on a line between the ear and shoulder joint. DRT every time. Kind of takes caliber, cartridge, alloy and all of that out of the equation as long as you’re using some kind of hunting cartridge with sufficient accuracy to make the shot.

Big, heavy and slow. A hard boolit and velocity well above 2000 fps haven't worked well for me lately. I think either of your loads will work just fine as long as the boolits hold together long enough to exit.

    I've seen up to a 170# hog dropped at 2-50 yd with an 1100 fps 45 Colts with a 452-255 RNFP and 454424 .
I saw one @140# shot head on with an 1800 fps 250 gr 35 Remington hit about mid snout scrambled brains and the bullet in the back strap just behind the shoulder .
Shot one with a 257 Roberts jacketed head down spine surgery ....... Blood shot armpits ........

Given the choice of the 2 I'd say use the 35 Remington .
Any quartering shot that will go through the lower chest in or out or the described neck shot will do nicely .

In a dozen or so hogs I've shot or been immediate party to only 2 ran , 1 was already running at the shot . The other is really anybody's guess . It was a 300 WSM my suspicion is bullet failure due to poor placement and poor bullet choice .

The wallow is where the armoured pigs get the armour rap from when they get wet then get the clay mud all over , then it's like trying to shoot through an inch of dirt to get to the hide , fast and small blows up while slow and fat wrecks stuff .

The one that is easier to carry. They run just as fast on 3 legs as 4, no lung left - still ran 50 yds. 40SW @ 25 yds. Exit was through the 'amored' chest along with lots of bone (150# boar).
    Whatever!

I would suggest which ever you shoot best. I have shot hogs with .223 and on up. It really is about where they are hit. I generally use my .300 BO AR-15 most of the time lately. You have inspired me to dig out the .35 Rem and a couple of boxes of ammo to go get some more sausage meat.
