40/60 solder hardness? Good for rifle?

How hard is 40/60 solder? This in 40 tin and 60 lead.

Would this be good for rifle? I have Lino I can add.

I’m debating buying some 40/60 or wheels weights in ingots already.

I don't know the hardness but it would be a waste of tin to cast bullets with it straight up. It would be a great way to add some tin to another alloy, like wheel weights. The alloy calculator is a great tool for blending alloy and its in a sticky that can be downloaded.

Lightman is right. Anything that high tin is expensive and will cast light boolits. Before antimony was easily available the highest anyone went with a straight tin/lead alloy was 1:10. Buy a lot of WW ingots and a few solder and you'll be good to go.
I give loading advice based on my actual results in factory rifles with standard chambers, twist rates and basic accurizing.
My goals for using cast boolits are lots of good, cheap, and reasonably accurate shooting, while avoiding overly tedious loading processes.
The BHN Deformation Formula, and why I don't use it.

Do you trust your casting thermometer?
    A few musings.

2% Sn is the MAX you should ever need!!!!! Why waste your Sn when alloying it is so very easy.

Just use the FREE alloy calculator on here.

You 40/60 will go a long way if used correctly and not wasted downrange.

40/60 is sure different that COWW’s! Do some research B$ you waste your good alloys.

That would give a BHN of about 11.6

The coww I have used are already right at that number. Wouldn't the addition of more tin to the mix increase the BHN..?

Hes not only adding tin but also pure lead. 60/40 so hes adding more pure than tin. Tin improves flow a lot, added to linotype or mono type it should make a very good alloy. Lino and mono could probably even be cut some with more pure lead and still be very useable

Ahhhhh...right. I was thinking 1/4 lb of tin and not the 1/4 lb of solder.....must learn to not think ahead of what I'm actually reading about....
