Best Adjustable Scope for new Ruger Precision .308

Believe it or not the wife has been lusting for a new Ruger Precision .308 and bought one that was brand spanken new with a Bushnell AR 308 scope on it. This scope is supposed to be ok but now since she wants to try her hand at some 1000yd target shooting I am wondering if a better scope woud be in order. She has a Vortex 6X18X44 on her 300 blackout. Would that be better on her new Ruger?

First thing will be to get some 20 MOA scope mounts. I have a Vortex 5-20 Razor HD on mine and it is a fine scope but very expensive. Almost regret buying it at times. For long range paper punching it stays at 20x.

I would consider the SWFA fixed power scopes if I was doing it again.

Oh that means it's easier to get forgiveness than permission

I know the Vortex Razor 5-20 I have is a great optic. If that is not expensive enough...try the Schmidt&Benders.

I have a Vortex Viper 6x24x50 FFP M-RAD, I love it and would recommend it highly but mine is a Gen1 and they have moved on to the Gen2, based on my Gen1 I would buy a Gen2 in a heartbeat. It's on my Encore 6.5 CM barrel.

The wife and I have no secrets. I tell her what I want and she simply says well get it then. Never needed to ask permission or beg for forgiveness.

Don is right. For under $300 the fixed power SWFA scopes can't be beat. Tough, accurate, and track like a dream. Made in Japan with good glass and battle proven by the US Navy. Suitable for the 50 BMG. You CAN NOT go wrong with one of these things.

I would switch the scopes on those two rifles and try them out.

I used a 6.5X20 Lepould with side adjust parallax for years for NR any sight any rifle long range. It did good. I would recommend an variable power scope as I had days with heavy mirage where I was down to 12X-15X. Another recommendation is to fit the rifle with a good rear appeture receiver sight and front globe as there are more Iron sight matches In NRA long range than the any sight. As a separate point my iron sight scores were 4-5 points higher than the scoped scores usually, this was because I could see the conditions in the scope and held the shot to long. with the irons I got the condition in the spotting scope rolled down closed the bolt and broke the shot in 2-3 seconds.

Your ruger already has 20 MOA built in to the rail from the factory.

you really need a price point. in a median class id give the nod to the nightforce shv's. not cheap, but not super expensive, and they have most of the features that make the NXS a great scope.

I have a Sightron SIII 10-50x60 on my 308. Glass is very good and the 60mm Obj really is bright. It tracks well. My 223 will get a SWFA 10x HD.

I really never paid too much attention to scope quality and prices until I went out and shot prairie dogs. You sit in glass for hours the quality of the glass is a huge deal. Since then I do not buy cheap scopes or cheap scopes with poor glass.

Don’t overlook Burris scopes! Lb for lb I believe them to be the best value in scopes today. And I own several SWFA scopes including the 5-20HD.

$800-1000 id look at the Burris XTRii line
$1000-1250 id look at the NF SHV
$1250-1500 id look at the Bushnell high end DMR2 line
    $1500+ NF, Vtx Razor 2, S&B

I’d opt for FFP in either MRAD or MOA, whichever your sighting preference
