    HELP for Smithy Granite

One of you posted about a motor problem with this thing. I can't find it now.
My lathe just stopped while milling some 3/16" slots. The magnetic switch still clicks in but nothing happens. Can you get back to me?

I found it. I removed the motor and one wire was un soldered from the brush holder. I called Smithy and they said the wire is supposed to be silver soldered, not soft soldered so he is sending me new brush holders.

There you go the annswers is usually Calll Smithy. I have always got the straight scoop from them and usually the first person on the phone has the answer. That's why i recommmend thse for starters as help is always there. I have alos done a LOT of good work on these, but without a hand wheel threading is a pain.

I got a hand wheel with mine. Smithy has a kit but one part needs to be made. The man I bought it from already made the part so I installed it.
First time I turned it on I had the oil can by the handle and it unscrew it!

Smithy has good tech support. I bought an old 1220 second-hand, and they have been very helpful.

One tip: You can reduce a LOT of chatter when milling if you lock down the X-Y or Z axis that you aren't using. Also, I ended up making a stand out of 2" square tubing, then filling the tubing with concrete. Man, what a difference! I can actually mill steel now.
