Traffer, when I turned 12, my Dad took me to town to pick out a new .22, and I ended up choosing the Browning over the Marlin, mostly because the Browning was a bit handier for me at the time. If the gunshop had a Mounty, I may have chosen it over the Browning, but got the Browning instead. It cost $72, and the Marlin $3 more. The Browning is an excellent rifle, no regrets, and from '74 till about 1980, that rifle hardly ever cooled off, as we had an abundance of jacks and gophers in S Dak , and I felt it my duty to hunt them without mercy.

I have in the shop now a 39A that got jammed so the fellow took a hammer to it and bent the lever broke the lifter and then took it all apart to FIX it and lost the springs. I have a mint action barrel and stock and not much else and now the owner doesn't want to spend the money for parts as he only paid $130.00 for the gun.

That’s a shame. If it was a 80’s vintage with scope tapped top and no safety and I was closer I think I would look at it as a project gun. Sadly my best iron sight days are behind me and my ‘51 39A isn’t scope ready.

Is the top tang drilled & tapped for a tang sight? I put a Marbles on my 1939 39A. Perfect for old eyes.

Yes it is. At the moment it has a Williams 5d receiver sight. It’s bulkier than I like. I have a series
80redfield that I need a replacement mounting screw. The gun shop I bought the used sight gave a screw with it but it only grabbed one thread. The red field has hunting knobs and a thinner mounting block.

I like peep sights. For target shooting the front sight peep works better but that’s no good for squirrels.

    $400.00!!!!

My fist gun was a 1966 39A Golden 26"... Sold it when I went to college in 1970... Have had one since and a few Mounties and Carbines.

Once all the dust settled the winner and keeper was a 1964 vintage Carbine... I like the 3/4 magazine and light tapered barrel. The one I kept had to be some kind of presentation gun. Found it in a shop in Connecticut on consignment. Some older gentleman had passed away and his grandson found it in a closet about two years after the man had died....and no one in the family wanted it. Has AAA wood and a high polished blue with initials engraved in the receiver...have no clue what the story is behind the gun or who it was made for...

Mr. Scott, that is a beautiful 39A. Get an eye cup for that tang sight. It will shoot much better.

Actually this tang sight has a flip out aperture, it is not threaded for screw in apertures.

I bought this rifle at a sportsman's auction. I think that it has be restocked with a more modern 39a stock that Marlin checkered. At one time Marlin did some custom work on request. The other 39a Marlins that I own from the early 1950's do not have the white butt spacer not the white grip cap spacer.

I've been shooting and owning Marlins forever and can't remember Marlin ever offering a checkered stock like that ever, even after market? But, I don't profess to know everything? Anyway, nice/attractive setup.

Don't feel bad ( you likely don't) because it's you job to fix firearms and not your job to fix stupid people. If you fixed it for nothing he would do the same thing again.

Marlin offered the 336 ADL or deluxe package. I believe the wood was from Bishops.

Wayne, what year/era is this rifle from? News to me? I know Bishops and others made replacement stocks for Marlins but, is this from the factory? Please show some pictures of the "Bullseye" in the stock of your rifle?

    Nice snag on the Mountie.

I've had a 39A since 1958, which Dad bought for me. It taught me how to shoot.

A fellow employee, who was retiring, asked me for a "really good 22" when I asked what he'd like for a retirement gift. I thought immediately of the 39A and went to Coast to Coast looking for one (this was in 1980). The ones (new) that they had had rough actions and poor attention to detail. So much so, that I didn't buy one.

Marlin 39a produced in 1951 had the white spacers and a brass insert in the grip cap. If you sent it back to Marlin, they would engrave 3 initials. They called it a Peanut model.
