    Blackmon press - shell holder?

Does anyone know where a shell holder adapter for the Blackmon press could be found? I have BT’s simple kit, and was wanting to derim some 22 in it, but this kit came with the shell holder style punch.

Why not email Brian & ask his advice? They're his dies, right?

But not Bryan's press. Depending on the press you have, you need to contact Dr. Blackmon and ask him what the thread profile is. I use his dies, but in the Corbin CSP press which is 5/8 x 24. If his are the same and he does not make a shell holder for it you can use the one from Dave Corbin.

What did you end up doing. I would like to use my Blackmon conversion with a shell holder once in a while.

To be fair, I didn’t call Dr Blackmon, so I have no clue if he offers one, since I did not find one on his site.

I called Mr Dave Corbin, who as I was talking to him had one in his hand. He kept trying to talk me out of it, as it would possibly not be indexed to my ram.

It is part number CSP-1R on his website.

I tried to message Brian, and he must be busy working orders for people.

Hope this helps, for me, as I said before: Problem solved.

Indexing is a non-issue. Just rotate the shell holder once in the cross over to any position you want. If for some reason you cannot insert and remove a shell holder due to space, just unscrew the crossover the 1/4 turn to do so and screw it back in once the new shell holder has been inserted.

His concern for indexing, is the adapter is a “reloading adapter” and has a slot for primers to fall through. An incorrect index would allow primers to clog. However, the stroke and space in the Blackmon, my intentions of using it to reload would be next to never. And you could insert the shell holder prior to tightening the adapter, and you will as always be able to index the shell holder itself. I have other presses for reloading, and needed the adapter to hold reloading style ram punch(es), to keep from having to buy additional sets that I don’t necessarily need, if I can make them work in the Blackmon.

AH! I did not think in those terms. I de-prime in a separate machine for everything.....information bias

Problem not quite solved. I’m going to need to turn a little off so it’ll retract. It’s just large enough it doesn’t follow the ram when retracting.

Hope it's got enough meat to allow that. Hope it's not hardened either, lots easier that way

Yeah, deciding to not modify the Corbin one. Guess it’s time to learn how to use all the equipment that was left to me. Went to Lowe’s and bought some round bar, mic’ed my ram.

Got a good start on a blank. Just need to acquire and modify a couple tools. At this stage, I’m basically at a blank die too. Guess we’ll see how this turns out. Not sure if I want to turn the threads or buy a die. (Since I’m new at machining. The machinists I work with tell me to buy a die if it’s going to be a regular thing.)

Yep I also would buy a die. How are you going to cut the shell holder slot?

Plan is to use two different end mill bits, one to cut the first channel, then a modified one to cut the “rim”.

FYI, 43 years, and I never before cared to have dad teach me. All this equipment in my garage now, and I’m just barely learning it.

Must be going to do it on a mill? Wonder if a key cutter would work for the slot?

I've tried to find the thread about someone making a shell holder from a rusty bolt, iirc he did modify an end mill into a slot cutter. Maybe someone can find it.

I found the YouTube for it, thank you. He described my intentions with the modified mill bit.

GONRA suggests HtNRun do single point lathe threading but save last couple mils.
Chase / finish the thread with his shiney new die.

This kinda "slam bang machining" suits most any home made stuff you see on these web sites.
The die will ALWAYS come in handy for more projects as the years go on......

Just need to slot it for the shell holder now. Perfect die blank otherwise!
