Best lead find in a long time

I was at a 22 plate match a month ago or so and saw a couple buckets of lead, asked who’s it was and they told me to take it!
Then they asked me to bring back the 5-gallon buckets, no problem! The member in charge of the indoor range asked if I wanted the lead out of the other range too!
I got to it today but ran out of buckets before I ran out of lead!
I’m guessing I have gotten over 700 pounds so far and will be getting more ASAP.

Range lead is nice. it's like "I know it will cast into bullets because IT WAS bullets" Might even be able to beat the heat and get that smelted into ingots before summer hits. Nice score with good timing to boot.
Scrap.... because all the really pithy and emphatic four letter words were taken and we had to describe this source of casting material somehow so we added an "S" to what non casters and wives call what we collect.

Kind of hard to claim to love America while one is hating half the Americans that disagree with you. One nation indivisible requires work.

You clean up the jackets and you can get $1.30 +/- a pound for them at a scrap yard
Not only did you get a lot of lead for free, you make money to boot

I'm jealous! I can't see that opportunity arising for me anytime soon. That would last me a long time, though I would be adding to it to harden it up a bit (until I get my muzzleloader).

Check your local scrap yards before you put a lot of effort into reclaiming the jackets. Yards around here won’t touch them.

Well, you could always set up a small forge and melt down the jackets and pour copper ingots - every scrap yard will take that. When I was a kid we set up a small forge with fire brick and melted down old cartridges into brass ingots, I still have one in the shape of the ceramic cup that I used as a crucible.

Started the smelting today. Had 120# in the buckets average, got 75# clean ingots. Burning oak and sugar maple in the drum.

filling up the bucket with ingots!

Probably have 2.5 gallons of copper jackets by now too.
