    Proportions

    First off I am a tad lazy today. Secondly i don't have MS Excell. And yes, I could do this long hand I suppose.

    I have on hand the following alloy;

    16/1
    30/1
    linotype
    cable sheathing

    I would like to smelt up an alloy that comes in about 12 air cooled and 16 quenched. 10 and 15 would be ok too. The softer air cooled for subsonic and the quenched for loads up to 1850 or so.

    Thanks in advance.

    go to the top of this alloy forum and download the alloy calculator. once you learn to use it ( easy) you can play with whatever mix of those you want, and it will tell you the bhn and total weight. good luck

    It you use 1 pound of each, you should achieve approx 12.3 BHN air cooled according to above stated calculator.

    Many thanks. I will have to get a copy of Excell so I can use the calculator. Probably simpler to do a batch of Lyman #2 and a separate batch at 10 bhn or so. And then I will need a Lee hardness tester.

    You don't need to purchase excel, you can use "Google Docs".

    Mucho gracias Camper, got it up and running. Have about 300 lbs. of pure lead and I think I will smelt it up to 30/1 with pewter. Then I can add lino or Roto super H for stiffer loads right in my casting pot. A good base alloy with enough tin to fill out the mold nicely.

    Your welcome. Glad to help out. That calculator is a pretty cool tool to have.
