03 sporter. , it spoke to me.

I saw an 03 sporter right after I was reading about the 03 Sedgley Sporters in the American Rifleman and was somewhat susceptible or perhaps even suggestible. The lines of the rifle, both in the article and the one available just strike me as being beautiful. The one I saw is rebarreled to 338-06 and just gracefully beautiful. It has really nice wood and good finish on the metal. It is in a left hand stock which is a draw back for me but I almost want it any way. I would be another rifle that I can not find time or place to go shoot, and another caliber to get into reloading for, and to cast for too. Two things keeping the cost down I think are the caliber and the left handedness of the stock.

Quite a few years ago found a bubba'd Remington 03A3 sporter in a gun shop for about $90. Bore was toast and was in a Bishop stock. The game was on. Found a NOS A3 barrel, which I spent quite a few hours with files and silicon carbide paper removing the machining marks. Already had a Lyman 57sme rear sight. Gunsmith removed the old barrel, installed the new one, drilled and tapped for the lyman and said if I did the final polishing work he would give me a break on the blue job. Made up a polishing rig and the smith blued it and installed a Redfield ramp front sight. All for $200. Still have it and probably never sell it. Iron sights only. Should have had it D&T for scope bases and redo the bolt handle. I've a 03A4 sniper bolt so maybe will use it and since I have the '06 headspace guages it checks out great. 338-06 is one cartridge always interested me. Frank

That left-handed stock should be salvageable with some time and effort. A wood rasp or two, some files, sandpaper, and lots of work will eliminate a wrong-handed cheekpiece. Just saying.

As for yet another cartridge to gear up for, well, I have dies for over 40 cartridges now...
