    Dilemma-which should I choose?

A local gun shop has two Mausers, one a Brazilian long barrel in 7mm with a lot of cleaning wear at the muzzle, the other a Greek Mauser in 8mm with sharp rifling all the way to the muzzle. Both are 150, so which is the better option? Both are partial bubbas,so what ever I choose would get a more proper sporterization.

You forget where you are asking? Buy one, put the other on lay-away! I’d get the 8mm 1st. Todd/3leg

Get both! They are not making them anymore. $300 for both is a good deal actually.

For a sporter I'd go with the Brazilian 7mm. You can always shorten the long barrel enough to eliminate the badly worn portion.

I’m one ahead of you on that. I figured to cut 4 to6 inches off from it and recrown. It’s going to be a few days before I can get back there, but if their both still there, I’m going to offer the 250 for the both of them!

While the Greek Mauser may be more collectible, if Bubba'd it is only a shooter. A Brazilian M1908 Mauser with a good bore is quite rare. They were shot with corrosive ammo and the Brazilians weren't to fussy about cleaning the bore. However, they were made by Deutsche Waffen und Munitionsfabriken (DWM) and are some of the finest M98 Mausers ever made. Swedish steel and German craftsmanship made by the same people who originated and perfected the Luger and 9mm Parabellum cartridge.

I was in Brazil in the summer of 1961 and saw quite a few of the older Winchester and S&W firearms, as well as Colt. The one thing that I noticed back then was what Curato just brought up. They were not too particular about their cleaning. Run a patch with oil down the bore after shooting and they considered it good to go. I won't put in print what the old Gunny in our outfit had to say about their arms mainteinance .

The actions alone are worth the price if they are un- pitted IMO. The Greek is an FN? and the 08 a DWM. Top shelf Mauser actions.

I was able to get there yesterday, and the Greek was gone , but I got the 7mm Brazilian. It’s loose as a goose, but it’s got possibilities!
