T/C Renegade vs. Hawkin parts compatibility

Random question about part compatibility between T/C's Renegade and Hawken rifles.

Both have hooked tang breech systems but are they the same plug/breech for both rifles?

    Hello taco650,

Track of the Wolf lists 15/16" percussion breech plugs with both 5/8-18 and 11/16-20,
and 1" percussion breech plug as 3/4-16. I would suggest pulling it & measuring.

Breech plug size depends upon the barrel size.

The Hawken & the Renegade were made with both 15/16" (thick, measured across the flats) & 1" barrels, and those two breechplugs are not interchangeable.

    Renegade's were made in .50, .54 & .58 caliber.

    Hawken's were made in .45, .50, & .54 caliber.

    .45cal Hawken's had 15/16" barrels.

    .50cal Renegade's had 15/16" barrels.

    .50cal Hawken's can have either 15/16" or 1" barrels.

    .54cal Hawken's & Renegade's were both made with 1" barrels.

IDK what size barrel the .58cal Renegade has.

It might help to better explain your thoughts or plans. For example locks interchange, but barrel related parts will only interchange if the Hawken is 54 cal, because they are one inch and the smaller Hawken calibers are 15/16 barrel channel. Thus, being too small to accept the larger diameter barrels.

I have put together a few Hawken-Renegades using Renegade parts (lock, barrel, tang) in .54 cal Hawken stock.

The factory Renegades are all one inch from 50 to 58 cal.

Here's the deal, I'm in the process of assembling a half stock play ML just for fun and I bought a used T/C .50 cal barrel (15/16) supposedly from a Renegade on fleebay but it didn't come with the hooked tang. There are several tangs from T/C Hawkens on fleebay right now and the hook slot looks the same as a Renegades but looks can be deceiving.

I'm making the stock from a tulip poplar blank I have and just need a lock, hooked tang, a barrel wedge and a single trigger and the rest is just wood working. I'll get a Bivens trigger assembly from TOW when I get the other parts.

Don't ask why because they're just not a good reason LOL but its a cheap way to go and as long as it shoots OK, I'll be happy. It will also give me good practice carving a blank so if I ever get serious about building a ML with a blank stock and raw parts, like those from TVM or Jim Chambers, I'll be a little more confident. I also want to have a stock that fits me and I'm not trying to replicate an original so I'm not worried if it doesn't look "authentic".

If the barrel is 15/16 it was not from a renegade. Renegade barrels are all 1” across the flats.

So in this case, any 15/16 TC tang should work

    .

Your problem's going to be the fact that not many parts (like the hooked breechplug) are barrel thickness (size) specific (the seller may not know from whence it came).
