Need help with double rifle 30-06

Would like a cast load for this rifle. Baikal side by side. I found a great load With jacketed bullets. Tried some factory 180s, (not bad) but my M1 Garand load of 150 gr Hornady with 49 gr of IMR4064 shoots like a house afire, grouping four shots (two from each barrel at 50 yds in under two inches. Average four inch group at 100 yds.
I tried the old standby, 16 gr of 2400 behind a 186 gr Lee 314 powder coated, but the groups are crossing about 8" apart at 50 yds. Gotta slow the boolet down. Try a light load of Bullseye?? Have most powders available.. Any sugestions? Thanks

Les, there is a formula for either 4198 or 4895...my years and memory are telling on me. I believe it's 60% of max of one of those powders generally shoots to the sights and regulates. I believe the formula is on one of these sites and a search should turn it up.

That's pretty decent grouping with your Baikal.

    I've played with a number of different double rifles, 450 N.E.(2) 470 N.E. 450/400 N.E. 8x50R 400/350 N.E. and a couple of more.

I read a recommendation in a double rifle book to go to a pistol weight cast bullet and play with the speed. I did that and had pretty good success.

With the 06, do a search for gallery loads. If you can find a copy of Phil Sharpe's book there is a whole group of gallery loads to try. A fair number of them with powders that are still available today.

Allrightythen.....got some good success with the Double rifle. Had to adjust the regulating wheel all the way no pressure and even had to wrap plastic tape around the barrels to get it to shoot parallel with cast. 18 gr 2400 with the Lee 186 GC powder coated sized 314 grouping under two inches at 50yds and around 3-1/2" at 100!! Gotta chrono that load.

Again try LIGHT for caliber bullets, I had the most success with light boolits. Think 330 grain 45 caliber when the rifle was regulated for 500's.

Only exception was a Evans double that had started as an 30 Purdey then re-bored to an 8x50r. That put 6 rounds into 2 inch @ 50 yards with two shooters. Close to standard weight bullets in that one.

    Duh!

Didn't notice it in the military forum, thought it was a serious question as opposed to just a question in jest for us observationaly(sp?) challenged.
