I use a 30 Luger size die to form the neck. Then size with a 256 sizer. Works well with fired 357 brass too.

When I was making 256 win mag my process was to anneal, run the into the seating die (minus the stem) and the full length size. Worked fine.

I have a Contender in .256 and use the standard reloading dies for forming. I use once-fired (I guess) 357 brass that I pick up at the range, then anneal the top half of each case. I use Imperial case lube and rarely have a problem forming to 256.

I have used the 30 Mauser die to get the first neck reduction and then the 256 sizer to finish them. This works fairly well but I get shoulder wrinkles on a few. I got lucky recently and bought an RCBS case forming set for the 256 at an auction very cheap. They are about $275 new. I made up about 150 cases, some brass and some nickel, and it worked flawless without annealing. There are three dies to get the neck close then a fourth that also has an inside neck reamer. The third is a file type case trimmer. And finally you FL size them with a standard die set. The #1 die from the forming set wouldn't help much by itself as it doesn't reduce the neck much.

30 luger and 30 mauser should work the same as a first step.
    I do
    30 Luger
    256 seater die
    256 sizer

I get about 95% success on range brass 357's

I had about 80-90% success just using a Hornady full length sizing die. I used Lee sizing lube thinned with water. I ran the case about halfway into the die, then relube run the case about three quarters into the die then relube and run the case all the way into the die. Use a slow steady pressure, remember the brass has to have time to flow! Good luck and have fun with the 256. Tim
