    Alcan Flite Max 5 wads

bought a bunch of shotgun components from a guy today. There were 3 bags of Alcan Flite Max 5 wads in the bunch. They are a plastic cup with a partial cut I/2 way down on 2 sides and fiber wads inside the cups. Looks like a good slug wad. Anyone ever use these?

    Quite popular in the 1960s.

    Alcan catalog, circa 1966:

You can find a limited number of Flite Max shot loads with a few currently available powders in the shotshell loading appendix of this 1970s vintage work. Be especially cautious with shotshell hull listings, many are long out of production high base hulls. Only a few such as AA12 and Federal paper base cases are still available or in current production. There is no published slug data for the Flite Max series of wads.

There is very little usable load data for half-century old plastic wads.

I used the No. 1 in 2 3/4 in Winchester brass back in the 60's. 1 5/8 oz of shot over 28 grains of herco.
The best duck hunting load ever.

There is plenty of data in older Lyman manuals. I think I used data from a #44 Lyman manual. The later Lyman data were published in the early Lyman Shotshell Reloading Manuals. Look for a first or second edition manual.

I found a bunch of these cheap in the 60s through the 80s and shot them up at skeet. They worked well and are easier to see than most other wads. They tend to pass close to the target when fired.

I found a bunch of these cheap in the 60s through the 80s and shot them up at skeet. All my Alcan wads were 1 1/8 oz and I used Red Dot for all of my skeet loads. I think you can easily cut the height of the felt wads with a single edge razor if the wad column is too tall. If it is too short punch some dime size slugs from a cheap book cover and drop in the shot cup.

They worked well and are easier to see than most other wads. They tend to pass close to the target when fired.

It doesn't matter much to me because all the powders made by Hercules are still manufactured and I have a large supply I got when a discount store closed.

guess with 50 years of loading experience, data from all them years and still have Alcan powders, I might be able to play in the deep end of the pool
