    Auto Body Solder ?

When I was a kid , looking at a used hot rod was always with the admonishment to never buy a “Lead Sled”. Those were the days before “bondo “ or fiberglass .
What was the composition of body solder ?
    Thanks
    Bob

Using the search feature in the upper right corner of the main page gives several threads that discuss the composition. More than one composition was available. Here it the search link for your convenience.

Lead sled was used more a a reference to the overall weight of the car than the amount of body repairs. Same as iron dinosaur. As to the composition of auto body lead it could be ordered with different compositions depending on personal preferences of bodyman and the application it was to be used for. 60/40 was common. It’s been a long time since I’ve done any pick and file work! Or spitting tacks on interior for that matter. Hope this helps.

When I saw a video of someone doing that work I was amazed how little there was left when he was through!

I once had some information on the standard solders sold by the National Lead Co. The auto body solder they sold usually had lower amounts of tin. It varied, depending on the exact product, but generally in the 30% range (+ or -).
